Default Deathwing Armies

hey everyone, a quick question.

Do Deathwing armies traditionally have Land Raiders and/or Dreadnoughts or Venerable Dreadnoughts in them? It crossed my mind to sell of a chunk of my tau to make a Deathwing army and came across my mind...

Thoughts?

When you say "traditionally" do you mean they have Land Raiders and such in actual armies fielded in lists or do you mean in the fiction are they mentioned as being used? I can't say for the fiction but from what I've seen before the new codex came out most guys just tried to get as many termies in as possible and just teleported.

I was thinking more along the lines of a fluff army...

I guess what I'm basically asking is does the Dark Angles 1st company have only termies, or should i include dreads/raiders to make the army more attuned to the fluff?

Well in terms of fluff you can easily say they're all termies but since you want to put in Land Raiders thats fine and perfectly reasonable. I don't know how things work out in the new codex but in the old one land raiders were the only heavy support you could take so yes you want land raiders take land raiders (and dreads) ;D.

Well... they need SOMETHING to drive themselves around in when there isn't a teleporter around....so I would assume a land raider could be justified.

A landraider is a fine, legal, fluffy, and recommended choice. the other day my landraider crusader took 7 railgun hits and 2melta hits and survived. never even stopped firing. While this will not be typical, it sure was helpful. Get one.

The day before the above situation, my drednought took 5 lascannon shots and a hit from a powerfist and didn't even slow down. Also not typical, but he won me the game by taking all the incoming fire and keeping it off my termies.

Under the new codex Deathwing armies got both better and worse.

Basically when building a Death wing (or Raven wing) army you have a lot more flexibility now.

The way it works is this, Terminators are an elite choice. Ravenwing squads are a fast attack choice.

However if you take a grand master of the Death wing or Ravenwing then the related units can be selected as troops as well.

So if you want to do a death wing army you can take the Grand master of the Death wing, and terminators become troops. Then you can choose to take only terminators, If you wish you can add dreadnoughts and land raiders.

However there's nothing forcing you to do this. You could simply take the grand master, take two termie squads as troops and select whatever you want to fill out the rest of your army.

Hell you could even take both the grand master of the raven wing and the death wing and make a 1st and 2nd company army.

This will work especially well considering the Deathwing assault special rule, coupled with the ravenwing bikers scout move and teleport homers.
