Heya,

I just need a bit of enlightenment and inspiration here, as Codex CSM's doesn't really do Chaos Lords justice, and many BL books I have read haven't really portrayed them well. Just how powerful are Chaos Lords?

They're like Force Commanders, only there's more of them and they're infinitely cooler.

But seriously folks. Fluffwise, you can make a Chaos Lord pretty much as powerful as you please, though people might get irritated if you venture near the 'Primarch' power level. Keep in mind that, while Chapter Masters are a few hundred years old, the lifespan of a Chaos Lord is measured in millennia; many were out and about during the Heresy about which we've heard so much. Also they're harnessing the power of Chaos and many can no doubt tap directly into the Warp, boosting their power when nessecary. So really, there's no upward limit, although those that push the 'believable' bounds of spacemarinery should probably be branded Daemon Princes.

A Chaos Lord can be almost infinitely powerful. Just look at Horus! With all of the chaotic Gods and powers, there are a lot of fluffy ways to making a Chaos Lord practically the strongest mortal guy in the universe! He could be possessed by a Daemon, bearing an ancient Sword with the essense of a God inside, subject to mutations, power having been bestowed upon him by one of the Chaos Gods (or multiple Gods!), etc. Lotsa options on this kinda thing.

The only reason ya don't see a Lord like Horus every day in 40k is that GW tries to keep the game fair. Chaos Gods can get VERY powerful.
