Ok this may seem like a silly question but just humor me. What is a doctrine?

It is somthing that an imperial gaurd army may take that alters gameplay and gives the alterd abilities. thats to the best of my knowledge i dont have the gaurd codex handy

Yeah, they're kind of like SM traits for IG, except you have five "slots" for doctrines and no disadvantages.

Doctrines are a set of beliefs which influence the operations of an organization. In 40K terms, its the "style" of Imperial Guard army you can choose. IG players can mix & match them to create a specialized force (Mechanized, Drop Infantry, Storm Infantry) and use special forces (Psykers, Storm Troopers, Gang Members). It allows the IG player to diversify and represents that fact that the Guard pulls troops from literally millions of planets each with their own environment and society (thus influencing the combat doctrines of the force).

Actually, there is a "buried" disadvantage: by taking doctrines, you limit yourself to taking only some (or none!) of the Restricted Troops. If you take no doctrines, you get the entire list. However, since most people don't field everything, most people take Doctrines for those combat advantages.
