Default 40k Doubles Tournament

Hi i was wondering what everyone made of the new setup of the 40k Doubles Tournament?

It is quite a departure from the previous setup of two 400pt combat patrols. Aside from the increase in points, the lack of restrictions on heavy armour, large tanks and large creatures will make a huge difference.

It is now essentially a 1000pt tournament, where the army has two commanders and can be selected from two codexes.

Which leads me to my second question, with the new setup what codex combinations do you think will be particularly effective?

Depending on which armies you and your ally are using mostly, that would ultimately influence the answer given. I however, would say that Tau and Eldar would be a mighty potent combination, especially if it was my friend and I >

I have to admit i was also thinking that a tau/eldar combination could be quite powerful.

Do you think a mech tau/mech eldar force would be effective?

Well, the largest advantage to having 2 Mech forces is that everyone has a lot of tanks to deal with, but then again it is only 1000 points altogether, so you'r going to be dealing with about 3-4 tanks at the most (I have tried more, it won't work). As long as you can get enough guns on them, I say they will be very potent and nigh undestructible.

Something shooty like tau and something assaulty(maybe with power armor).
The two sides weaknesses are cancelled out.

IG might be nice to have on your side because of the integrated firepower in line infantry squads... whereas Tau Fire Warriors don't have that. Combining IG with a more flexible Chaos Space Marine or loyalist Space Marine force... with enough Lascannons, anything will go down.

Now, I could also have 2 Leman Russ tanks on a legal but cheesy IG list at 500 pts. I haven't tried with Tau, but I think a Railhead & Ionhead with minimal other choices can be done at 500 pts... and maybe that would be better.

I don't think I'd want to try to assault anything at 500pts... just not enough bodies to throw into the grinder compared to the shooty spam that can be pumped out.

][con in melbourne has been a doubles tournament for around 5 years. Its a pretty different and fun format.(although its 1000 pts per players, so 2000 all up)

I have just thought of a major problem with the joint mech force, the transports lack of scoring unit status could cost you the game.

For example in seek and destroy say its a close game and you are only 100vps ahead on kills, game ends you dont get to add the 200pts for your transports still being alive, you lose.

Similar situation for the other two missions.

It would seem sensible therefore to keep non-scoring units to a minimum, what do you think?

IG and Astartes together. Mix your expensive elements in with the watered-down expendible support.
