Default Cover Save from rivers.

A quick question came up in-game the other day. We were using a river that cut the board in half and my squad was in the river. Now, as I remember it, rivers count as difficult terrain but grant a 5+ cover save. However, when I went to look in the BGB I couldn't find it. If somebody could please tell me whether or not I am right or wrong. Also, if you would tell me why I am right or wrong it would be much appriciated. Thanks all.

Rivers do not give you a cover save. They only count as difficult terrain, slowing down enemy troops. Page 25 of the 4th ed. Warhammer 40,000 rulebook provides a listing of all terrain that offers a cover save, as well as a listing of what would count as cover, check that out.

Personally I like to treat that chart as an example of what typical examples of that kind of cover would give. Rivers aren't included in the chart for some reason, so I would talk it over with your opponent beforehand. Afterall its a lot harder to see someone if their head is the only thing poking up above the water

And, as the Mythbusters proved, water does a VERY good job of blocking bullets.

You could always use the rules for river cover in an unofficial match if both you and your opponent are in favor of it.

Well, it really is between you and your opponent as to what offers what sort of cover save. you are suppose to go ver that before you start the match and decide what size the terrain is and how much cover it affords. Yes, the river might offer cover, but you should have decided before the match not tried to figure it out half way through.

Spiritbw, you are absolutely correct. I should have figured it out before hand but it slipped my mind. The funny part is the fact that we specified the size and cover5 save of every other piece of terrain on the table, just not the river.

ToastMaster, the list in the codex is not an end-all list. It also tells you to use your common sense and clarify it with your opponent beforehand as Spiritbw has already said. If you are inside of the river then it could count as hill crests, rubble or maybe something new. We rolled off and said that it was a 5+ save. In reality, his entire argument was the fact that the piece modelling the river (about 1 cm thick piece of dirt with water in the middle) wasn't deep enough to cover a SM, Firewarrior or anything else. He litrally took it as if it were a river. Oh we, lesson learned for next time...
