Default Optimal squad size?

<I tried searching for this, but if you search "squad size" it returns every post with the word "Squad" in it, so that didn't work well>

So here's the question guys:

You're making a unit, so how many people do you put in it? This is specifically for a unit with 2 special weapon users and a character with weapon upgrades.

Personally, I am torn between 8 and 6. 8 Provides more protection for your special users, but 6 is a good deal cheaper in points, and still provides good protection.

So what opinion do y'all have on the matter?

I voted 8 and 6. It all really depends on what your doing, like if you have a long range squad you may not need 8 guys, but with a CC group you could use those extra attacks.

What a silly question. It really depends on the army, and the options allowed to it.

For shooty squads in armies that allow heavy-weapon upgrades, six. Six is an even number, which is better in 4th ed. It requires 4 casualties to drop you below half strength for scoring purposes, while enabling you to maximize the number of heavy weapons (and therefore, heavy-weapon targets) in your army.

For units that deal most of their damage with their basic weapon, as many as you can get - within the confines of any transport you need. Sisters do well with squads of 20, or squads of 10 in rhinos. Drop-podding marines deal most damage through raw firepower, so 10. Necrons in squads of 20 are almost impossible to shift. Firewarriors in 12. Etc.

For assault-oriended squads, as many as you can get for the points you have. You need to make sure there's enough damage-dealers left after crossing the field.

For orks or tyranids - as many as you can get, even numbers are optimal.

For Emperor's Children - 6
For Death Guard - 7
For World Eaters - 8
For Thousand Suns - 9

For cheap scoring units (think ravenors, death koptas) - 1 - you only need one model to contest a table quarter that way.

I belive that you are referencing to marines here. I voted 7 and 10. 7 is pretty cost effective while needing 4 casualties to break it. 10 for Effectiveness. 20 attacks is better than 10 after all. JMO

Redbeard pretty much said it all,

but I always go for a 6 man shooting squad and a 8 men assaulting squad.

10, becuase in the imperial guard we only get 10. and no one takes remenants.

For marines: 6 for las/plas tank hunter type squads, maybe with a razorback. Or if not 10 Man squads with hevay bolter or missile launcher and a special weapon, to sit and shoot. For CC squads 10 guys in a rhino with a melta gun and a powerfist/weapon wielding sergeant.

For Tau 12 men, always.

For Chaos, if your using dedicated armies then your patron gods favored minimum number. Although khornate bezerkers way benefit from having 16 instead of 8, but it'd be rather risky.

For orks, the bigger the better, no matter what your taking. 10 is an absolute must for squads like burna boys and kommandos.

For greyknights i use full 10 man squads. Dont know if that gives me any tactical advantage, but i just happen to have exactly 20 greyknights.

I don't see anything I posted that goes against this. Drop pod marines play very differently than normal marines, and have different requirements for squad sizes - even though they both can take 2 special weapons. Sisters too are very different, though they would take 2 special weapons and a squad leader. Do you want 20 footsloggers, or 10 in a rhino?

You got so much more complicated than need be, and I also said it was for a 5-10 man squad, so 20 footsloggers are out.

Oh well, so much for having a fun debate. Seems like it's just boiling down to what you're doing with it... Shoulda known in the first place. Oh well.
