Default Sniper rifles good?

I've heard everybody say that sniper rifles are good but why?
A 4+ is great to wound a fex but not a marine or something small.
They have bad armor penatration to.
Ap-6 is nearly useless.

The only good point is 2+ to hit.

they cause pinning. not great against marines, but awesome against orks and other low leadership, low armour save armies.

well by itself a sniper rifle is barely going to cause any damage, but when you start adding more (aka a squad of 6) and fire away at the bloodthirster/Carnifex/other big thingy. you would be surprised at what happens every turn they have to take 3 armor saves, and sometimes you get to reroll sniper rifle wounds (on average 4 armor saves)

My brother has a full squad of them and they usually do quite a bit of damage before i stomp them in the ground. And, if I remember right (its to late to be remembering) they do ok shooting at vehicles. Theres some thing about shooting at vehicles that made me angry in one game, but I dont remember it because it was one game and it was some time ago. Maybe someone else will know what I am talking about. They can usually infiltrate too, which means they can usually set up it a good spot. Ok, so im rambling, but all in all they are good, not necessaly godly, but they are good.

Sniper rifles get 2d6 armour penetration, with no base strength. This makes them about as good as S5 non-sniper weapons at shooting vehicles - ie, a minor help against light vehicles, but not much more.

The greatest strength of sniper rifles is against high-toughness enemies, preferably those with a poor armour save. Against a wraithlord or standard carnifex, for example, a squad of six will inflict almost a wound per turn on average - and they'll inflict more than one wound per turn against a greater demon. Against basic troops, their main advantage is their pinning ability, but there are too many armies in the game that are resistant to that in one way or another for it to be a reliable tactic.

Overall, I'd say that sniper rifles are too specific in their primary function, and not sufficiently good at it to warrant taking them anyway. Your mileage, of course, may vary. Why don't you proxy them for a game or two, and see how well they do for you?

In scout squads, sniper rifles work well when combined with a heavy bolter, because the heavy bolter can mop up any troops the sniper rifles didn't kill.

Don't forget lonely that an Eldar sniper rifle is ap 1 on a to would roll of 6. Also, they used to be 13 points a piece but were changed to 19 in 3rd edition

I find that snipers in game terms not accurate in the real world. Ex. A normal .50 cal rifle would take down any infantry (1 shot, not 1 wound per turn) and do a good deal of damage to most vehicles.
