Default Very first

Just out of curiousity...what was the very first army created by GW?

I always figured the ultramarines were the first.

Hmm... that depends.

I suppose the first ever army were the Marines; they were on the cover of Rogue Trader.

However, we also had Humanity (as a whole), the Imperial Guard, Eldar Pirates, Squats, Orcs, Jokaero...
Farewell, Kangaroo Joe, you shall not be forgotten.

Warhammer fantasy predates 40k by about 10-15 years.

The back of the Rogue trader book had a series of scenarios titled "Battle for the Farm" if i recall correctly.

These focused on battles between the Crimson fists and a group of Orks.

The Jokero are supposedly brightly furred ape-like creatures that happen to be absolute masters of making tiny ring sized weapons with all the punch of a conventional pistol

Ah, the Squats...if only they were'nt of the lost and the damned.

Anyway there is a bit about the 40k Universe and the Warhammer Universe being one in the same. If so, then it would be one of the Warhammer Fantasy armies that were the first "40k" armies.

Yep, that was the first introduction ever into the 40k universe. In rogue trader, the only real race was humans/marines, you could hire eldar and such as mercenaries.

So, if the Joekoro made a HUGE ring, and pointed it at your planet, you'd be screwed.

They wouldn't need to make a ring... I recall something about Jokaero field-stripping and rebuilding a standard Lascannon into a Titan-killer.
