Default An Idea

Has anyone ever played a game where you make your opponent's army list and they make yours?

I was sitting here thinking and I thought it might be interesting to play a few games that way, seeing what you can do with what shouldn't be a terribly good list. You'd be able to make your opponents so both would usually be terrible lists, and each player could play with an army that wouldn't be finely tuned like they usually are and you'd be playing based on skill alone rather than the cheesy combinations of units that people tend to use.

Very interesting idea, having to play with non-optimal units... for "horde" forces like LaTD I've actually started rolling squad sizes up (for instance, Mutant squads are 15 + 2D6 models).

Glorious! You would have to make do with what you would get. This might encourage a lot of players to actually think about tactics and solving missions rather than producing killer lists. Do try it out and see what happens.

The Eldar Rule:

"If any model with the special rule Eldar! is on the battlefield the player may instantly declare victory and arrogantly storm out of the room. They may also claim any models, cash or cookies that are in the room."

I want to put to the record that I wholeheartedly support this rule and think GW should adopt it whenever they redo the Eldar codex. Cash and cookies are always good, and arrogantly storming out is an underrated pasttime

Tactics? In fourth edition? They still exist?

BOT, yes, sounds like a lot of fun, but how do you stop them blatantly giving you a naff army, like all grots, or a Eldar army, full of banshees, but no transport for them? Marine army with no min-maxed units (god forbid you play marines any other way).

In the lastest (and last!) Canadian White Dwarf supplement they had a battle report a bit like this.

Both players took the sneakiest lists they could in a game of fantasy. After they'd deployed their boss told them to switch sides!

It was a fun battle report, though some of the pictures were blurry.

If you were going to do this I'd suggest either a) suprising two opponents or b) trying to encouarge people to make solid balanced lists, instead of trying to cripple their opponent with a bad list.

I've done it once, but we wrote the list our selves. ven that is hard enough, as you don't know the best combinations...

Try this out, flip a coin.

Just make your opponent's list as suggested but let a coin toss decide whether or not you have to field it. That way you have to make a list that's viable if you field it but not TOO tough if you fight against it.

That's an awesome idea.

Let's take it one step further.

4 player game, each player makes a list and brings an army. Write the name of each army on a slip of paper, then each player picks a random peice of paper. Then you really don't know what sort of force you'll be using.

But I dont want to play with a SM army of 24 scouts with bolt pistols and CC weapons, or an imperial gaurd army with now special or heavy wepons. :'(
