Everyone has their own "playing styles", and I'd like to know what yours are.
For me... I like a story. I'm really into heroic charges and valiant last stands (like a Scout Squad fighting off a Carnifex...). I tend to write army lists with a story in mind. I think about what style of fighting the commander likes, why he would have each unit in the army, and what situation they are fighting in. I find this approach tends to make the games a lot more fun, even if you sometimes end up fighting the long defeat (I'm Blood Pact, you're Tanith... oh boy). So what about you? How do you play your battles?

I play for the gameplay and the fluff in equal measures. I generally avoid doing unfluffy things on the battlefield, but because Dark Eldar are both highly intelligent and savagely bloodthirsty I can use any tactic with them and it will be fluffy. Standing off and shooting = sadistic target practice and wearing down the opponent while instilling dread in their thinning ranks. Full-throttle headlong charge = giving into the wanton frenzied need to mutilate victims. Archon charges powerful enemy commander = Archon wants to remind his minions exactly why he's the boss. Archon avoids powerful enemy unit = Archon shows pragmatic self-preservation instincts, an admirable trait for Dark Eldar...
On lists: Under 3rd ed rules (which some of my opponents still prefer) I use a full-blooded Raider assault, sometimes using everything against one flank. Heavy weapons teams hang back and pick off choice targets. I use virtually the same list every time, the only differences are taking off Horrorfexes when I'm up against Fearless armies. In 4th ed I go for a more subtle WWP army. Very risky until the portal is opened, and even then it can be tough. I'm still working this one out, so the list varies quite a lot. Against very shooty armies I start with more units on the board to escort the WWP carriers. Quote:

I'm pretty much similar to Wargamer here. In previous games, I've mostly played with the intent of just winning. But ever since I started collecting orks, I find that I'm not playing to win any more, I'm just there to have fun, and have some laughs as my warboss gets torn apart by a DP, but 10 shoota boyz charge it in the next turn and wipe it out :P.
I've even decided to keep track of how the battle went, and if possible, take pictures of key moments etc. to make battle reports. This way I can keep track of what I did wrong, and I can learn from my mistakes easier then trying to remember a battle that took place 3 yrs ago :P Ender

i play it like a game...not a more harshly competitive, dull game like chess, but more of a beer and pretzels game...
as for actual style, i like my mobile, short-ranged oriented wolves. if there's an objective, i tend to pounce on it, quick as possible, then try and force my enemy to do something stupid. if its a kill 'em all, i just try and whack 'em where it hurts

I love to create armies with depth and storylines that reflect in my games, for instance in my old Catachan army, the sergeant of my Catachan Devils was killed by an Eldar Farseer in one game, he was replaced by the Corperal in his squad with the 'sawed-off lasgun', the next time I fought this Eldar Army the Catachan Devils heroicly rushed the enemy Farseer cursing his name and shouting out a warcry in remmembrance of their fallen leader, and actually ended up killing over half of his bodyguard before they made a 'tactical withdraw' (ok so it was more of an all out route but that wouldn't sound very heroic)
I know doing things like my Chaplain holding a Grudge against a Bloodthirster isn't the most tactically sane of ideas as he charges it proclaiming his righteousness and calling to the Emperor for strength, but it makes a damn good post game story.

Generally I like to play to have fun.... if theres background fluff then cool
However as a game runs you find little subplots that 'entice' a storyline for example in the last game of 40k I played (1k points) there was a squad of chosen termies bearing down on my front line and the tale of how my fire warriors took 4 turns to shoot the 8 of them is almost an epic tale of resilience and frustation! (In the end they managed to obliterate the termie unit which then exposed the chaos luitenant to my shas'o who fusion blastered him to kingdom come)..... Of course the 3 obliterators who shambled up behind the terminators (who had survived 4 turns of hammerhead and shas'o inability to hit/wound) then ate fw unitsleft right and centre! |
