This is my first post so sorry if I'm off topic here or if there is already a topic about this.
I've been interested in playing Warhammer 40k for a long time now but after searching around this board and looking at the game workshop website, I just don't know if I could spend this much for a game. I go to the largest high school in the state of Ohio and I don't know anyone who plays 40k. The game sounds like great fun but after buying a codex,paint,models,etc... it looks like you can spend up to $200 just to start the game! The only place I know where I can go to play the game only holds monthly tournaments and I don't really know how many people show up. If anyone has any price saving ideas or suggestions for me would be greatly appreciated. If there is already a topic about this I'm really sorry and hope a mod or someone can point me towards it and get rid of this post. |

1 word, EBAY!! they have cheap models, you can find good armies ( I found 2000+ points of nids unpainted and 2000 points of dark angels unpainted) for 300 dollars.

I know I can afford it but $300+ is still allot of money considering that I'm not even sure how many people I can find to play. I actually might need to buy 2 army's so I can get other people to play me because I don't know anyone interested in spending the money to play the game.
Anyway it would take me like 3 months to get $300, which you said is really cheap so that is kind of discouraging. I would like to know, could you play a decent game with 2 battleforce boxes, a rulebook, and the corresponding codex's? |

Depends on the army. Some yes, some no. You should buy the Battle for macragge battle set. That is the best deal I have seen from GW. You get models and a rulebook for 50-60. Thats really the cost of just buying the BBoR, so yea. Do you know what army you wish to play? From there you can buy only what you ened, and get by cheap. Or, like was mentioned before you can buy whole armies on ebay and save hundreds.

I was thinking of playing the Tyranids, but I like all of them really ;D the Tau and imperial guard also sound cool.

If you want cost-efficient wargaming mayhem it doesn't get much better than Warmachine.
Personally after finishing my Tau army all my money's going to Warmachine until GW drops their prices. $30 for a starter army + absolutely INSANE rules (picking up someone and THROWING him into someone else anyone?) makes for a very fun game. Warhammer 40k IS cheaper than some other games, surprisingly. I used to play Mechwarrior: Age of Destruction. If you want to remain competitive look forward to spending $200~300 every two months or so with each new set. Oh, and having a TON of miniatures that aren't very good to your army. Conversely with Warmachine and Warhammer 40k once you buy your army you're pretty much good. Sure, maybe it'll cost you about $500 for that army, but you never have to buy it again. EDIT: almost forgot, a Warmachine army (a big, nice army) can be had for less than $150.

if your worried about not enough people in your area getting into it, get your friends in on it. ive converted 4-5 people to playing, all personal friends of mine. they might even split the cost of some stuff with you!

Ebay does wonders for prices, go check it out.
Also don't forget this hobby normally requires an initial burst of cash, but after that its pretty much free to play. If you look at how much you spend, compared with how much you play you'll find it very cheap (hundreds spent, but been playing for years, only costs around £1-2 a week realistically).

1: Never buy from GW unless you have to !. eBay and online stockists will save you massive amounts of money! 2: Try not to buy a 'horde' army (Imperial Guard, Tyranids etc). These will cost you much more money. If you play Space Marines, 1 Tactical Squad (£18) is one Troops choice. If you play Imperial Guard, it takes minimum 1 box of Shock Troopers (20 men, 2 squads of ten, £18) and a Command Squad (4 more men and a Blister of Officers) for a normal Troops choice (I'm not counting Armoured Fist Squads). 3: Don't buy loads! You'll spend less money, and it's much less daunting to paint 10 men, then 10 men, then 10 men than it is to line 30 men up and realise you have to paint them all. Sorry if it's a but messy and/or hard to understand, but I'm tired :P |

Hi Chriszilla445,
I first looked to start a new hobby about six years ago that would laid back and enjoyable, but would keep the old grey matter working I was pointed to warhammer by a friend of mine who's son played. After a few visits to the local shop I knew it was the game for me. That's when the price hit me. I had no idea it would be so expensive. I did what a large amount have people have suggested beg borrow and If you can get unpainted models perfect, if not don't worry buy painted ones and leave them to soak in brake fluid (car brake fluid) for about 5-6 hours. They should then be taken out and washed on hot soapy water, this will clear of all the last spots of brake fluid. When you have done that change the water and leave them to soak in boiling soapy water for 30 minutes, wash them and then swill them in water and dry. You now have models that are ready to use all clean and sparkling. You can normally remove paint from about 200, 1" or 2.5 cm high sized models for every 1 litre of brake fluid. Sometimes the paint is so thick it will need a 12 soak in brake fluid to remove it all. This is by far the cheapest way I have found to buy models. Most go on eBay for peanuts and I have had some real bargains. Please look at finding anyway you can to get involved in this hobby as the more players we have playing the game the more varied and diverse the armies will be and the more fun we can all have. Enjoy this wonderful hobby.
