Default Singular Saves

I've only recently started playing 40K from the warhammer game format, and find one rule very odd.

Why would a model only get to use one of it's saves?

If it was behind cover, in a battlesuit and equipped with a shield generator, really, all 3 would help save it.

The cover could take the hit, the shot would have to penetrate the shield then also penetrate the armour before doing any harm, yet you can only use the best one, doesnt make much sense to me really, though i'd love to hear some sensible reasoning as to why it is as it is...

dam i was about to post that question as well. in the rule book it explains cover saves as the round bouncing off the wall etc i don't see why is it penetrates the all that the armour wouldn't be able to attempt stop the armour

I suppose it's made this way so that certain things can't dominate the battlefield... like your example. It's just easier if each model gets only one save...
Remember, logic and Warhammer do not ever go together. Ever.

I think cover and armor saves would make sense, but again think of the shift in balance. THe game would have to be re-worked, and GW isn't about to put forth that much effort Seer councils would be indestructable if they ever did that.

Yeah, you only ever get one save... imagine a Chapter Master with Artificer Armour, an Iron Halo, and camping in a bunker... beyond irritatingly difficult to destroy. Logically it might not make sense, but gamewise it would be unplayable.

I tend to think that if a model is in cover, he will have only his head showing. So, as a consequence, the only place for a round to hit is in the head.

Yeah, balance sweeps in this case. While a cover save followed by an armor save is logical, it would be completely unmanagable.

Wasn't it that if you have a armour save you use that.
But if your in cover and the cover save is better you use the cover save or if you armour is periced because you are allowed a cover save if your armour is peirced and you are in cover.
and then the invulneable save is used for weapons that peirce through the normal armour save, and it's usally better than the cover. But you can only use one. ( As Vash has said below).

That's what I think of coruse.

( Edited:thanks vash for the correction, I worded it wrong :P )

No, one save only, ever. If your in the open and the weapon doesnt deny your armor you use that, in cover you can use either the cover save or the armor. And if you have an invulnerable you can always use that though mostly you would only use that against high strength, low ap weapons as a normal save is usually better.

It would be entirely impossible to have a good game if all 3 types of saves were allowed at once, because nothing would ever die. You have one save because it is a balance issue. The game does not always make logical sense, you just have to live with it.

I think if you are in cover it should affect actually hitting the target not armour like in fantasy. You know with light and Hard cover
