Default Planet creation

I want to create a map for a campaign that's kind of like a Risk board. Does anyone know what programs could be used for that, or more specifically what programs GW uses to make the maps in thier codexes (IE the Armageddon codex, etc.)?

GW use professional products and artists.

You can always just take a suitable posterboard and draw carefully on it....

I wouldn't know how to print directly onto a carboard posterboard. Ask a copier store.

First off, learn a bit about geography. If it's an earth like planet, think about where the various zones will be. Jungle at the equator, then deserts, then temperate as you move outwards...
You could have all sorts of fun here, have a look at various features of the world and how they came about, then think about how you could use them...

It will probably be easiest just to use a single continent, that way the world doens't have to wrap around.

I figure if you are trying to make a map campaign you could just get a map of an area of planetary surface off the net (from some sorta sci-fi show or something) and then draw lines on it to mark out different areas

Well, I just either use a country map and white out all the names and stuff you dont want [Havent actualy done yet] or I slap on my cartographer nametag and hunker down. I mainly use Ice worlds, so at equator, Temperate, Tropic Lines [Equivelnt to Tropic of Cancer] Taiga, and from then on, barren Wasteland of ICE!

Most of my fluff occurs at the Tropic to Arctic zone.

That's ok, I found a program called World Builder that creates planets for you. Sorry I don't have a link to download it from, but do a Google search and you should find it. It's pretty cool, it takes a super continent and then applies continental drift to the model breaking it up. You just drift it until you like it, and it creates mountain ranges etc. Then, when you're happy with it you can specify general climate for the planet, and it draws up the climate zones for you. Can't save it from the program itself, but PrintScreen works just fine. It took me about 10-20 tries to get a drift pattern I like. I'm just drawing borders onto it now. When I'm done, I'll post up the map (it may take a few days, though) and if anyone wants the program, it's freeware, so PM me and I'll email you the .zip file if you want it.

Thanks for the help though!!!

Alright, got the map finished using the World Builder program and drew on the borders. This is a bit small, when the map is bigger, I'll put the country/continent names on them. I'll just use it like a Risk board. What do ya think?

Perhaps a bit too much water?

The planets this program creates is limited to that much water, unfortunately you can't vary the percentage of water to land. I wish you could, but oh well. It doesn't do everything I want it to, but it's the best I've found.
