Default What makes a vetran?

We all know about what a vetran is, but who has a solid definition (ex: played for x years, top y% in tournaments, ect.)? I was just wondering what everyone thinks.

Someone who understands the rules with confidence. That's pretty much all you need to know to be a 'veteran'. Sure, you could say you have to be x age or what not...but then some people pick up the rules right away, and some people never learn.

I'd say if you can fake being a veteran among other veterans, that's good enough.

That's easy! ;D

All you have to do is walk into your local GW store wearing a neckless of teeth & few savored heads hanging from your belt, quoting from the codex. ;D

A bionic limb might help too :

Someone who understands that winning does not mean defeating your opponent.

Deep. I see how that works, although it's probably better phrased; "someone who understands that winning does not necessarily mean defeating your opponent."

I'd say that you're a vet when you seriously consider working at a GW store, or probably could no problem. 5 years, most of the time, means veteran status as well.

The people at my Local Hobby shop consider me a veteran and I have been playing for about a year and am not even 20. My first army is barely coming to completion. Nevertheless I know the rules pretty well, have a good grasp on the technicality of many of the rules and have mopped the floor with all the other veterans in the place at least once. The only thing I have not done is play every army.... getting there, getting there slowly but surely. Gotta find an ork player around here somewhere, and a DE, blasted.

To me there are several types of players, there are the noobs, the annoying beginers who cant understand tactics for their life. There are newbs, genuine new guys who are into the game and are trying their hardest to learn the rules. Then there are the core players, those who have a fairly decent understanding of the rules and tactics and at least know how to use there armies. Then there are the veterans, can be of any age, and are people who know a higher form of 40k tactics, know their enemies and army, and are decent and sportsmanlike. Next you have the Ubber Veterans, these are the guys who have been playing since 40k began or at least 2nd edition and have numerous armies and gripe about the progression of 40k that few of the new players (myself included) can understand.

Then of course you have the flagrant cheaters but I shouldnt get into that...

Anyway thats just how I define them.

I would say there are different types of veterans as well as different levels.

Anyhow, let's just make a few notes about someone who could be considered veteran probably:

Understands the rules; Doesn't just know them.
Can be wrong; Has been wrong; And is humbly corrected when it happens.
Is respectful to all players, new or not.
Doesn't win every game, but learns from each one regardless.
Knows how to win humbly and lose graciously.
Doesn't claim to be a veteran.
Is willing to re-learn things, even if they thought they knew it well already.
Is honest when it comes to rule queries when the material is not on hand.

Anyhow, that's just a few.

The point is, a veteran is someone who plays the game and knows it's mechanics well enough to have good games that don't require turn after turn of rule-book validations and confirmations and acts like a good human being, and not a nasty little goblin who just wants to win even if it requires lying.

Cheers!

So what your saying is a good sport?
