Default Warmachine taking over?!

Has anyone else noticed that gamestores are starting to have more warmachine & horde games? My gamestore used to have wh40k games every other day, now they have mostly war machine. You have to arrange a game to play tournies now. And the wh40k section really shrunk. Also arent warmachine models diecast? Actually only one game store nearby has wh40k games anymore. Out of like, 8 stores. But on the plus side its mostly new players and a few really good players who are really helpful. Its has quite a few boards too.

Never liked Warmachine. Someone brought it round once, and it was pretty meh, so we all went back to 40K.

Dystopia Wars and Firestorm Armada are getting popular here, though.

GW can be a total <enter bad word> for independent game shops. So as soon as they notice warmachine etc. sells it is a natural reaction to decrease their dependency on GW.

Bork mostly hit the nail on the head there. A lot of people have become increasingly unimpressed with the GW sales model of late and have been looking for alternatives; Privateer Press was one group who took real advantage of this, but they certainly are not alone. More likely than a warmahorde takeover, we'll see a movement towards smaller indi game companies. It is a good thing for consumers and the marketplace.

WarmaHordes has something of a following here, but they're not amazingly enthusiastic about it.

I was talking with a guy who has several nicely converted and themed armies he's been collecting for decades, and he says that while it's better suited for competitive play, it isn't the same. It doesn't have the same model quality - he dislikes that the mould lines are often in the recessed details - and the fluff isn't quite as exciting as GW's. Plus prices to play each are comparable, it's just that 40K normally needs more boots on the ground.

If i look at the netherlands warmachine is definately not taking over, however GW is getting more and more competition from historical games, especially Saga and Bolt Action. I know a fair number of players who so far have been playing almost exclusivly GW games, that have started a Saga warband or Bolt Action (WW2) armies.

Now Saga, due to the small size armies, will never be a worrying competitor for GW, but in general i see a trend of historical games going 'mainstream' and in that respect it may have been an enourmous blunder from GW to have abbandonned things like Warhammer Ancient.

(again, this is totally based on what i notice in the Netherlands, and although the Netherlands is off course the centre of the universe....it could be totally different elsewhere)
