The skull is the symbol of the Adeptus Mechanicus, placing a skull on something is done in deferance to the Omnisiah (and so the Ordo Hereticus doesn't torch you). Part of their paranoid technophobia.

Because it intsntly gives them a dark gritty look and feel and instantly shows you just what to expect in 40k. Besides skulls are cool and what better race to put them with than the Imperials who are throwing themselves into meat grinders and crazy crusades all the time.

oddly enough, most of my minis seem to be suffering a lack of skulls...there's a few wolf skulls floating around, but that makes sense given that they're space wolves...

That's another reason I played Tau instead of Marines. The models are covered in all sorts of crap, usually skulls. What's wrong, force commander? You look more like a 12 year old than a thousand year old.

Skulls are cool, dark and gothic. They suit the 40k universe perfectly.

Skulls are also added to armour and weapons to give a sense of fear to the enemy - you see someone with a skull mask looming towards you with a huge gun with a screaming skull mounted over the barrel and you know he means business!

Skulls are an obvious connection with death. The Imperium is under no delusions about its fate; it is fighting a war of extinction. It is simply a question of which race goes extinct.

Death is also a major factor in the Imperial religion. The Emperor died, and was reborn on the Golden Throne, his projection of the Astronomicon requires countless lives, and hundreds must die every day to sustain their Immortal Emperor.

Overall, the skull motif isn't surprising...

many a skull is toppled from shoulders in the fires of battle... why get rid of them from your models? they add character and as wargamer said it makes perfect sense for the imperials to be covered in them given their history, as well as their future.
