Default Price cuts

I've just read....
Quote:
Well one of the reasons for the rapid decline of White Dwarf has been the staff reductions, PAul Rudge and some other lad have been fired as they are cost cutting. Unfortunately this means that there is less manpower to use on the "other aspects" by this I mean anything that is not targeted at the 10 year-old Space Marine/LOTR collecting audience. A big pity. I for one am now buying Miniature Wargaming and Wargames Monthly and another good read is Harbinger to which I recently received a free copy at a tourney. Be warned however that these alternative magazines care little for GW games so its not exactly like White Dwarf. Though some of the Confrontation and Warmachine stuff is cool and I have already given me many cool ideas to use their minis instead of GW ones.

Okay time to get off the soapbox and go cash these cheques from my corporate sponsors , I'd like to thank Harbinger, WM and MW.

Why are games workshop cutting staff & raising prices? ???

My theory.

I believe it has to do with Katrina and Rita. You see, plastic is petroleum waste, and the oil refineries in the Gulf are shut down from Katrina and Rita. herefore, less plastic and lessw models being made. This means less raw materials to work with, less people buying, and less profits. To make up for it, they are cutting staff they don't need and increasing the prices because plastic is less common.

If I'm wrong, its a mind-blowing conspiracy.

It's a company who's made some bad choices in investing in rights to produce LotR. The prices were rising long before the hurricanes hit, and although the price of oil affects them, it's more a case of trying to recoup some losses.

Case in point: LotR miniatures are more expensive than the equivalent WHFB or 40K miniatures. Fewer people buy them, they make less money. Until this contract with New Line cinemas expires, you're going to see cost sutting and price hiking for a while.

GW were idiots to cut the specialist games range. Sure, people may not buy a lot initially, but the games are much better, and so you're much likely to expand with conversions, or secondary armies.

From what i hear LoTR was 5 year contract, but they plan on renewing it when it expires and are very likely to get it.

i live in the UK n' my i talk to (and over hear conversations) with the manager of my local GW, he says they've lost god knows how much money through lord of the rings.

oh yeah, and when the managers say they've gone to a meeting or something along those lines, the are usually doing somethin fun, last time the went quad biking, and then they sent em to Prague.

and that's how a good business spends its money (this is from the managers and staff!)
