Zen... they aree cutting spending and increasing taxes so that they can cover the defficit. When they say cut the spending, they don't mean everyone start saving, they mean cutting the spending of the government.

20% is no big deal; we're living with it for now quite some time in Austria. Well, of course, we DO have one of the highest taxes in Europe (with more on the horizon), and my beautiful new salary will soon be destroyed by a brutal income tax progression, but, hey, that's a quasi-socialist government...

Also, a UK VAT increase should NOT affect prices in other countries - VAT is only paid once, by the "end customer" - so it is a localised affair.

Cheers,
-Bone

Yes, but the trouble is, GW sets prices based on the UK prices, including VAT iirc. So, it will affect them if they do add that extra 3.5%* onto the consumer.

I'm quite annoyed by that. A VAT rise will cause serious problems. There were worse alternatives, and there wasn't much else as a good alternative, but this is a large rise, and an excuse for many a price hike by big business that can absorb it, while smaller businesses will lose millions just implementing the changes or not passing on the cost to customers. It's not going to be very helpful at all I fear.

Personally, 18% VAT would have been easier to stomach. Lesser impact, and lesser complexity to work out. Barely any excuse for a price rise, but total, would still reap billions with little risk of damage to the consumer, to business, and therefore, to the economy.

We can maybe dream that GW will absorb the cost of the increase instead. I'm not hopeful. In fact, I'm not hopeful for very much of this country any more. I'm now voting yes if the SNP ever get that Independence referendum out.

EDIT - * As Will correctly points out it is only 2.5%, not 3.5%... Let's hope GW are better at maths than me!

It's 2.5% extra. :P

But, it will be annoying, they could have put it up at the start of the next financial year. But noo, they have to do it when I have Christmas money to spend. :

I think it's based on business Fiscal year, many of which end 31st of december. It is the Tax year that ends in April. I also share the feeling that GW will pass this onto the consumer, as most businesses would. However, remember when the VAT went down like last year or something, most of the stores didn't bother to change the prices, just deducted VAT. I reckon the opposite will happen now, you'll go to buy a 20 quid box and find it costs 20.43 or whatever.

(stupid american keyboard doesn't have a pound sign).

Its actually less than 2.5%, to work out wow much anything goes up you need to divide it by 117.5 then multiply the answer by 120.
