Default NYC looses 3/4 GW's in 1 year!

I recently saw the other post about a long standing gamesworkshop closing in the UK and thought to mention that 2 out of 4 gamesworkshops in New York City have closed in the past 8 months, and it is planned by summer time that a 3rd will be closed. The closing of the third shop was verified by The manager of the shop that i go to!

does any one know if there is a connection and if this is a broader event?

What would happen if GW went completely out of business? Would the game cease to exist past the current editions, or will someone else pick up the business?

Who knows, I think that they may be ok for a while, they have daemons codex coming out and also the 5th edition rules, so thats a lot of cash they're going to rake in from us _

Yes, this is an indication of financial stress in the company.

I don't understand the fascination with GW stores or why GW ever felt the need to have them. From the beginning they always felt so limiting. I guess the benefits have outweighed the costs for a long time, but now things are changing. When costs are a problem a tried and true step that companies take is cutting staff. For GW it means cutting stores too.

You know what they should do? Move their production operations somewhere where there's skilled and cheap labor. *Cough* *Malaysia* *Cough* *Singapore* There should bring down their operational cost and maybe make the models a bit cheaper.

There's only 4 GW stores in NYC?

Geez....I know Europe and the US always favoured independent hobbyists over dedicated GW stores but....

We had 6 stores in Sydney alone, one of which closed down last year, but that still makes 5, and Sydney is much much less populated than NYC.

Granted Sydney is also more decentralized...

That'd be why. You don't need more than 1 or 2 stores to serve a centralized population.

The GW store has been, and probably still is their greatest strength and asset. It provides an instant and recognizable brand for your company. Further more it creates intrest and a word of mouth recruitment for your hobby. GW gains gamers through stores. People see it, think "What's this?" and play a demo game.

Yeah NYC has only four, well even less now. I visited the one in Forest Hills, it was small and had one 4x4 gaming table in it. It had a small painting desk, a counter with a regrister, and then the walls were covered in codexes and boxes of things. They really know how to make good use of the little work space they have.

I agree, without their stores GW can't stand up to the competition. Their specialist stores are their biggest saving grace. This is why in regions relying on specialist stores like UK and Australia, sales are actually growing, whilst salkes keep falling in the US and Europe, where independent stockists take greater demand.
