Default But You'll Miss 'Em When They're Gone...

Well I love reading GW bashing threads... and then having someone show me this: GW Shares
As much as we complain, we're still glad they're around to make this great game of 40k...

But these market reports look pretty bad. Even with the new CEO nothing is changing. There is really just a downward spiral for GW. Most companies can't last long... Buyout, Sale, Sale of IP?

What do you guys think?

The problem is GW is doing everything in its power to alienate the fanbase, and then acts shocked when it doesn't earn them money.

Take Damnatus. I refuse to believe that people versed in law are illiterate in common sense, and couldn't establish an agreement that is acceptable by both sides. The entire GW fanbase wanted that movie, they did not do enough to get it out. They are paying for it.

Now, consider 40K in general. Why the hell did they waste so much time and money on Apocalypse? I am more than capable of throwing the rulebook out of the window and making up rules on the spot, I don't need to pay £50 for GW to do it for me.

Combined with ever-growing inconsistancy in the background, and "streamlining" of the game system (thus removing anything of interest to people over the age of 12), they are essentially making 40K a beginner's game that people play until they're intelligent enough to buy into Warhammer, or download a Specialist Game rulebook from the net.

I will admit the new rule formats are better than the old "Powergaming" stylings, but I for one preferred it when Fleet wasn't given to every army but Guard, when Universal Special Rules weren't universal, as only three units max had any one of them, and when spamming Assault Cannons wasn't the best way to win a game.

So what would I like to see happen with GW? I think losing their IP would be a bloody big help. This forum alone has proven that the bloody fanbase knows more about their background than they do, and can expand it far better. If they want to update Tau background, how about handing it over to us first?

I knew 40K was dying the moment they stopped making the universe static, and started making it evolve.

Yeah, I remember when I first noticed that and it left me with a sick feeling. If I remember rightly its actually been going on since the launch of 3rd Ed (alot of the changes were explained by 3rd Ed actually being set in the 42nd Millenium, not the 41st as 2nd Ed had been). Then they started killing of special characters, changing thing around. It just became a mess

They need to start supporting their fanbase alot better. Apocalypse was pretty unnessacary when you consider IA had already been doing a great job of including super heavies (they could have just made those rules legal). I could go on about this for hours, but I already know I'm preaching to the converted.

The massive, massive price increases have gone a long way towards it too. I remember when i was working for them. I left just before the latest price hike when squad boxes went from being £15 to £18. I remember alot of the regulars saying that when that happened they wouldn't be playing any of GWs games anymore and most of them have stuck with that promise.
Which leads to the next problem, the more vets go out the window the less the staff actually want to do their job. No one likes dealing with children when you work in sales, and alot of the time its only the regulars that can keep you sane (they're willing to talk about things other than 40k once in a while). As more and more vets walk away, the more the job seems like working in a creche, and the more that happens the more its seen as a kids game. None of this helps help players of an age to really play the game properly.

I honestly believe the biggest mistake theyve made was increasing the prices from where they were set after the release of 3rd Ed (£10 squad box). This was actually a price DECREASE for once in the companies history and I remember everyone I knew buying alot more. With what I'm earning now I could afford to do several armies at those prices, which would in the long run net them alot more money from my wages then they'll get from me now as I've decided this army will be the last one I make (unless I cave and make UBER FW nidzilla....)

My subtle diagram disagrees with you.
your "subtle" diagram contains Optimus Prime and Proffessor Farnsworth, it's heresy in it's own right!
Any similarities between your reality and mine are purely coincidental...

The stocks outlook is indeed bleak, but quite frankly GW deserve it (bloody £25 tanks...). One can only hope that they will be bought out by a better company who will whip GW into shape and bring back some much needed custom.

Virgin 40k, anyone? :P

My friend has a degree in Retail Management, he stopped playing a while ago and said that GW are the only company in the world that when not making money have a price hike...LOTR killed GW. It attracted the kids, caused more dumming down as kids moved from LOTR to the other games, it replaced the shop space for specialist games, and the people who owned the rights and leased them to GW siad they could no longer have offers and things. I remember every Febuary thye would have a sale and get rid of all the stock they hadn't sold and old copies of White Dwarf, Warhammer Monthly and Inferno. GW's CEO needs a slap and some strong coffee. The vets make the money 'cos we have jobs and spend more money buying legal amys not just a couple of models here and there...GW has made so many mistakes...America being one (I mean who builds a castle?).

You're just asking for Wizards of the Cost/ Hasbro to buy it out and turn it into a clicks game.

Ok well, I didn't intend this to be a bash-fest...

I'm actually commenting on how sad I think it would be to see the company dissolved. Loosing their IP won't allow us, fans or whatever to do anything. Their IP will simply be bought by another company and things could turn out to be worse... Soon we could have HeroClixMarines! Or Tyranidmon... catch 'em all! The guys who've been with the company for a while, and sculpted the Fluff and rules are actually quite good (regardless of what anyone says). Loosing the IP might mean that in the grim darkness of the far future there could be war... but also lame commercialization and a dumbing down of everything... a level that will attract only middle school kids and huge gaming geeks...

Edit: Wired, thats just what I thought!

You're right - that probably is what would happen should their IP go to auction, and that would be dreadful. What I am saying is that it would be better if GW were bought out by somebody like, say, Privateer Press for example, who wouldn't make any changes to the background or anything, just improve the hobby generally and attract back some much-needed vet gamers.
