it was one of the test model they did, and they thought the baneblade might be a better option, though there's still hope... new orks soon.. you never know

I heard that if the Baneblade was successful, then it might become a reality. But I doubt it. As to why anyone would buy one, why would anyone buya baneblade or a Warhound, when they can build their own? Same answers, I guess; don't want to; don't know how to; time; energy; there are any number of reasons.

Your right there stompas can be a mish mash of parts whereas Baneblades are more sophisticated

Not really, at least in my opinion. It may be easier to build an ork anything because it is so forgiving, but really, it's only a matter of time and devotion. There are plans, line drawings, all sorts of things, to aid you in your progress. There are forums like this to help with advice, and so on. But difficulty level, that solely depends on the details.

But that's not the point. It can be done, but it's easier to buy one and assemble it, if it's available.

They would've started off with the Baneblade as you can't sell a Stompa to almost any 40k player. Most armies can make use of a Baneblade one way or another, whether its an Imperial army using it straight out of the box, or a converted Chaos or Looted Ork Baneblade for example. I guess Tau could use a Gue'Vesa Baneblade. That's the 4 most common armies covered already (Marines, Chaos, Tau, IG).

Even if the Baneblade was sucessful it's going to be very risky and expensive for GW to start production large army-specific models. Sure we can hope that one day they'll do it, but at the moment, it's too early for that. If anything I would expect plastic Drop Pods and Valkyries before a Plastic Stompa...

Some say GW had problems fitting the Stompa sprues into one box, so either it may be releasing in the next April Ork update or it's canned.
