Default Help me pick an army!

Hi guys,

5th edition in on the doorstep, so I've decided it's time for a new army. I've decided I want to do Chaos. I want sculpting and converting, and I'm narrowed it down to 3 main option (others wanted):

Nurgle (not Death Guard)
Iron Warriors
Alpha Legion (Least favourite)

Suggestions welcome, please advice

Songblade

As I have said, I think you should go with Nurgle.
I don't like the Iron Warriors, to be honest.

I think you should go for Nurgle or Alpha Legion,
but it's up to you.

Nurgle would probalby offer teh best scope for onverting and sculpting to be honest, but you can also do a lot of interesting conversions with IW. If I were you though I would take the nurgle route.

Since you seem to be choosing between different chaos armies perhaps this thread would be best in a place more suited to evil scheming. To the chaos board!

Ok, thanks Fish. I'm thinking Nurgle would be coolest.

So, what are your priorities? One of the main concerns with 5th edition is that most armies will need many more troops, rather than relying on Fast Attack or Elites choices to capture objectives and earn the Victory(Kill) Points. Plague Marines will prove to be the most common and popular Troops choice available with a high toughness and Feel No Pain.

In all honesty the only way you can differentiate different Chaos Space Marine armies is by the units you choose. So for example, in a Death Guard army you would take Plague Marines as your only Troops choice. For an Iron Warriors army you would favour shooting over assault by using units like Vindicators, Defilers or Obliterators. Finally the Alpha Legion would take a higher ratio of Chosen Chaos Space Marines to represent the Alpha Legion's skill in infiltration. But, none of these are set in stone, and the only rule which applies to the Forces of Chaos is "anything goes."

You may wish to avoid Plague Marines, as now (In 5th ed.) 'Feel No Pain' will be negated by the ever-popular plasma weaponry (Much to the chagrin of Nurgle players everywhere).

Perhaps you should wait until we see what exactly changes, rules-wise, before starting a new army? We've all had that "New Codex/Rules shows up and nerfs our favorite unit(s)" feeling...

What no one else has asked is what fluff appeals to you most? What drew you to Nurgle and the Iron Warriors?

(And even a stranger thought- How about Iron Warriors that use plague/disease as a siege weapon? Harkens back to the good old days of lobbing carcasses over the walls of a castle at the defenders...)

Iron Warriors aren't that bad you could just use plague marines for heavily armed Iron Warriors i think it is a good idea they are siege specialists and the way i see it they don't need to move around a lot so a lot of armor for their troops would make sense.

Or go with nurgle..... man a lot of people have been turning to Nurgle lately

Alright, let's see...

Nurgle: Definitely your best choice. Best modeling opportunities, paint schemes, and specialized unit selection to distinguish them from any other army. Check out http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=54293.0
for an amazing example of a Nurgle army. Cadaver probably hates me for all the advertising of his Death Guard I do. Also, the new forge world models are beautiful.

Iron Warriors: From what i recall they were pretty cool in the 3rd Edition codex, but currently (as stated above) there is no rules set for them. No specialist (cult) troops to really make use of, and the basic infantry models are metal and bland... no good conversions or interesting paint schemes. Interesting in concept, fluff, but like the Alpha legion they aren't that great currently.

Alpha Legion: While personally I adore this Legion, they are horrendously represented by the current rule set. They would have a rather bland (Undivided) troop selection, and no decent conversion opportunities you would be looking for. It's a real shame, because I think they are fantastic.

That's a general outline of current troops, but a few ideas mentioned above that may sway you...

1) With 5th Edition changing, a bit of a nerf on Plague marines seems imminent. Not too bad however, you still get high toughness and a good armor save, and it may encourage you to use more icon armed marines instead. I still think Nurgle is a good way to go, but depends on how you view the changes.

2) There isn't any "definitive" Chaos forces anymore. No dedicated Nurgle, or Khorne... they're all undivided, which is cool. You can get whatever mix of units you want, useful from a competitive gaming standpoint or the point of view of somebody who can't make up their mind. However, this means that specialized lists don't exist anymore for some forces (Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors...) and others (Death Guard, World Eaters) aren't really that powerful or special anymore.

3
) Again, waiting for 5th Edition, and after seeing the new rules, evaluating what you want to use may suit you well too. We aren't 100% positive of prospective changes, and it would suck to begin building an army that would become useless or boring.

There are still tons of opportunities. I think the strongest candidate you put up is a Nurgle aligned army, they play well, give you tons of room for conversions and can have plenty of different paint schemes. Now then, you could do a mixed force... Plague Marine troops, Iron Warriors vehicles/Heavy Support, and Alpha Legion Chosen (infiltrators) mixes all the aspects you're looking at into one army. However, it will feel a little awkward/not very unified, but satisfies all your whims.

There isn't any gigantic distinction between Death Guard and normal nurgle marines, so you don't have to really worry... however, some Death Guard aligned models are fantastic (like those forge world kits) and they have a wealth of interesting opportunities to make use of.

Hope the information I put out there is useful and helps you in making your decision. If I had to choose one for you, I would say go with the Nurgle.

Good advice sionnach19. +1 Karma - Anton.
