Default If anyone is having trouble thinking up names for their characters...

If anyone is having trouble thinking up names for their characters i have a solution. I could never think up names, for anything! I would always have to use an already existing one or a word, but no longer. Well i still use words, but in Latin! Now they sound really cool AND they mean something cool. For example, i wanted to call one of my defilers Night Terror, but you know that doesn't sound that great, SO i jumped on to google and typed in English to Latin translator and i got a really good one, i think it was a university one called Notrudamn, or something like that. Anyway, you have to type in one word at a time oh and make sure it's spelled right, otherwise it won't know what your on about. Then just piece the words together. So i came up with Abnocto Horrificus sounds awesome right? These a some of the other names i came up with:

Obliterate (couldn't actually think up a good one for my obliterator lol!) - Contero

Ravage - Vastator

Loyale One (the sorcerer's familiar) - Finio Advoco

And the army name... Lords Of Dread - Dominus Ab Formido

Well i hope that helped.

I have used something similar but it is a sight theat gives you the meaning behind a name. The site lets you choose the cultural background so I went with Arabic. This is what I got.

The Chosen: The MUKHTAR = "chosen" in Arabic;

Nurgle Daemon Prince = AMIR BASIT, (Amir is "Prince" and Basit is "One who enlarges" in Arabic);

Khorne Terminator Lord = Khorne Terminator SAYYID ZULFIQAR (Sayyid meaning "Lord or Master"and Zulfiqar meaning: "Cleaver of the Spine" in Arabic);

Spawn = ATAULLAH Means "gift of God" from Arabic

Lesser Daemons = LUBNA Means "storax tree" in Arabic (I use Dryads as lesser Daemons).

Why limit yourself to just latin? Here's a useful link that will give you names in German, French, and other languages of the world...

Never really have difficulty about that, for I tend to name thing in my Plague army more or less up from the gibberish from my head.

Sada the Sorceror is one such name that I though up with.

Naming your characters?

Sorry, this seems too much like playing with dolls to me. Oh, let's have a tea party, we can invite Sada and Mukhtar.

I have toy soldiers. They die fairly regularly. The dead have no need of names.

But what do you put on their gravestones? Or don't you bury your dead :P

I like the latin, its an awesome language for the game, although doesn't really work for Tau....

And is playing with plastic soldiers any better? :P

I name Characters and unit Champions, anyone from the rank & file who distinguishes themselves from the others may get a name and/or a trophy. I prefer Daemonic like names for my Chaos Warband, there are some pretty damn cool Daemon names that float around in the bible. However, I think Chaos Marines with Arabic names sound more like a failed circus act and not superhuman, daemon worshipping, power hungry psychopaths bent on destroying the galaxy.

It is another aspect of the hobby for me, for I prefer to think of 40k as more of an RPG than those of just another wargame . Just think of the characters as those that games usually have, like Jim Raynor or something. It will make the game less boring (Painting, Modelling and gaming) and having more depth in your army. If it is just gonna be a game, might as well do 40k in the form akin Monopoly or Risk. Games with setting and storyline deserves a little something extra in my opinion.

But everyone to their own taste. Mine is to play my games in a more RPG style, and yours is to just play with them. No one is wrong, everyone is right.

PS: the rank and file troops do not deserve names in my armies. Only the HQ units are worthy of names.

Oh, I'm sure they get eaten by the tyranids in the end.

I try to distinguish my models with paintjobs, rather than names. It's easier with some armies than others, afterall, trying to do 300 unique ork boyz with a grand total of seven or so head choices is pretty hard, but there you go.

I see. Most of my armies only have one type of HQ, thus making naming easier. But for my Chaos army, which have 7 characters in total, this is what I do.

Daemon Prince: One and only so he is easy.
Chaos Lord: He comes in Terminator Form, Biker Form, and Jump Pack Form.
Chaos Sorceror: Same as above.

So I tend not to make new characters with evern HQ unit I have, I just make them a different aspect of my HQ. I do that modelling-wise and it works. One character, three alternate forms.
