Default My new love: Plague Zombies

I am currently in the throes of a 4,000 point game. I've pitted my 2,000 points of Eldar and my son's 2,000 points of Imperial Fists against my 1,250 points of Orks and my new 1,250 points of Chaos. That left 1,500 points unfilled on the Chaos side. So, after a bit of poking, I came across the Apocalypse data sheet for the Plague of Zombies.

I don't have Apocalypse yet, but I decided to field them anyway. 300 Plague Zombies! Yep - I used my historical figures as stand ins.

We've just finished turn 2. Let me say that these guys are awesome. They combine several powerful special rules for a very reasonable cost. Join Us! is my new favorite special rule. The Imperials teleported three units of terminators directly in front of my lines to stop the tide of undead. During my half of the turn, I charged. Sure, I lost 20 Zombies. But I brought down 3 terminators (2 of which joined the horde). I've still got over 200 zombies on the board and my opponent (and myself) is only now realizing how brutal these guys are going to be.

After this game, I think my excess historical figures are going to be in for a bit of a re-vamp as they become zombified. I'd love to field 100 of these guys every game. It would definitely be worth it.

Has anyone else had any experience with Plague Zombies or any insight as to how they can be used?
Thanks,
Em

The rules for them were right in the book? And are they just like they sound, just zombies?

The rules can be downloaded from the GW site in a pdf. They are just zombies. But they are relatively hard to kill and very cheap. They're decent in close combat and the Join Us rule is just a lot of fun. Imagine We'll Be Back but not quite as broken (and able to effect both sides).

Right now I've lost one whole unit. I've got two units committed to close combat and another 7 units of 30 zombies moving up to support.

In my opinion (from the perspective of the user) they should have gotten Slow and Purposeful or something to balance them out a little. If someone would be able to move them into close combat relatively quickly (read: flank march) they would be devastating to infantry and monstrous creatures. Against vehicles, though, they do nothing.

From what I read they do have slow and purposeful, unless there within a certain range of the zombie leader.

The rules are actually on the GW site in the Apocalypse Datasheet/fax section. Just look under Chaos for Zombie goodness. And yes, they ARE "just" zombies; dirt cheap, with stats a bit weaker than Guardsmen.

As for using them? Avoid enemy pie plates of doom, and templates in general. As you discovered, the "swarm" is the best tactic. You might also want to look at the "Flank March" Apocalypse stratagem- Nothin' says fear like a shambling horde coming at your enemies from ALL directions. And, of course, take as many Zombies as you can (As you could tell); they take terrible losses getting to the opponent, and most opponents will pull back to avoid them (See 'Flank March', above, to remedy that).
