Battle of Altaros IV: 203.M41
Carnage, played on February 9th, 2003

Chaos vs. Tau vs. Orks vs. Salamanders

Variable player turn order

It was early morning on the Western hemisphere of planet Altaros IV. The planet had been inhabited once, but all that remained nowadays was the ruins of its ancient civilisation. Today, those ruins would tremble in a furious battle between four merciless armies. A strange turn of fate had brought raiding parties of Orks and Chaos Space Marines, as well as small reconnaissance groups of the Tau and Space Marines of the Salamanders chapter on this forsaken world. Each group had detected unusual energy emissions from a millennia-old obelisk at the centre of the forested ruins. Now they were each heading the same way, and a confrontation was unavoidable.
Round I

Night fighting. Chaos won the initiative.
The armies of Chaos and Tau faced each other.

Chaos marine squad with rocket launcher moved on top of a nearby hill to get a better view at the area. Off in the gloomy distance they could just make out the advancing army of the Tau. Unfortunately the aliens were still outside the range of the marines' bolters, and the rocket launcher was not secured enough yet to be shot. The lumbering Obliterators moved closer, but it was still too dark for them to see the enemy behind the lines of the marines.

Suddenly the tranquility of the morning was disturbed by several loud shots from fast-firing storm bolters. The Salamanders had spotted the advancing ranks of Orks, and opened fire at their bike squadron. Only their sharper-eyed commander could mark a kill, though. The first blood fell on the ground, and it was thick Orkish fluid, combined with oil from the wreckage of the burning bike. The bolters were joined in by the heavy weapons of the Salamanders Devastator squad firing at the Orks' smaller cousins who were being forced to the front lines. Three pitiful gretchin lost their lives. Finally, the Land Speeder skimmer fired an ultra-heated beam from its multi-melta towards the Chaos terminators appearing behind a hill, but missed, causing a huge cloud of vaporised soil rise up in the air around the hulking suits of armour. The terminators hardly even blinked.

The floating Hammerhead tank of the Tau picked up the heat from the Land Speeder on its advanced sensors and replied to it by firing its impressive ion cannon towards the space marine vehicle. The smaller skimmer was lucky enough to avoid the shot, though. On the Southern front, the Tau heard the war cries of the blood-thirsty Khorne Berzerkers and started to feel uneasy. They knew that if the savage maniacs got close enough to use their dreaded chain-axes, it would mean a super sale of tinned and minced Tau meat, minus the tins. The Hammerhead was given a new priority objective, and it promptly fired a salvo of smart missiles at the berzerkers, downing two.

The advanced Tau crisis suits were not standing idle, and turned their weapons towards the chaos marines on the hill. Only one marine fell to the small missiles from the suit's weapon pods, though. Another fell to a plasma bolt from the commander's rifle. On the Northern front, advancing Eastward, the Yellow Company of the Fire Warriors spotted a band of Ork commandos hiding in the woods, and fired their pulse rifles, covering the tree trunks with Ork guts.

The Orks replied in kind, killing one Fire Warrior. On the Eastern front, the Ork wartrukk fired at the Salamanders' Land Speeder, glancing its fragile hull. The skimmer's crew were nearly knocked out of their seats, and decided to get some distance to the greenskins before turning to another try.

The Ork slaver commanded his gretchin to shoot at the Salamander terminators threatening their lines. One of the terminators must have got a slug straight into his eye, as suddenly the ancient battle armour fell silent, then fell down right where it had stood, never moving again. The Ork warbikes fired at the Salamanders' command squad, but their weapons were no match for the power armours this time. The warbuggy demonstrated to the bikes how things are done, and fired a salvo of rockets at the command squad. One of the esteemed veterans disappeared in a flash of fire and blood. The only remains were his smoking boots, still containing his feet.

The Orks' joy was short-lived, though. The dreadnought tried to fire its enormous shootas at the marines, when one of the weapons overheated, causing an explosion that ripped right through the walker's armour, disintegrating it completely. The shootaboyz lost their aim due to the explosion, and their heavy bullets hit the ground at the feet of the Salamander tactical squad.
Round II

The first sun slowly crept above the horizon, lighting the battle field. Chaos won the initiative again.

The Khorne berzerkers were overcome by their lust for blood, and ran over the hill towards the advancing Tau army. So fierce was their anger and hatred that they even forgot the bolt pistols they carried, and instead swung their chain-axes at the empty air. The chaos marines on top of the hill were more level-headed, and turned their weapons on the tau hammerhead tank. Their bolter slugs and even the krak missile bounced harmlessly off its fairly thick front armour, though. The other chaos marine squad tried to fire at the kroots hiding in a small forest, but the bolters only shook the leaves. Obliterators morphed their arms into lascannon equivalents, and released three focused beams on the Hammerhead. Armour melted and sparks flew high, but the floating tank was not destroyed, only its crew was stunned, causing it to float backwards without control. Meanwhile, the Chaos Lord and his bodyguard Chosen in their Terminator armours tried to take out the Salamander Devastator squad hiding in ancient ruins, but the loyal marines' armour held.

The Ork warbikes were fast closing in on the Salamanders' command squad, and let their big shootas do the talking. This time the marines were less lucky, and to their horror they saw the proud standard bearer go down, along with the invaluable Apothecary. The gretchin tried to match their larger cousins, but the shots only raised small clouds of dust. Right behind, the shootaboyz turned their barrels towards the Salamander Terminators. The legendary armoursmith skill of the sons of Vulkan must be seriously exaggerated, as two of the thick ceramite and plasteel shells cracked and shattered, killing the marines within. On the Northern edge of the battlefield, the Ork commandos fired at the advancing Tau Fire Warriors, killing three. Shootaboyz joined in from behind, but only one of their rockets found a target.
Orks charged the Salamanders.

Suddenly the Ork warbikes revved their engines and plunged towards the Salamander Command squad, with big shootas blazing at their sides. Once again the shots were deflected by the power armour, though, and the marine commander slew one of the Ork bikers with his sword.

The Tau crisis suits tried to stop the advancing Khorne Berzerkers with missile pods and burst cannons, but most of the shots missed their targets, and the berzerkers' power armour stopped the rest. Only the Tau commander managed to kill one berzerker with his plasma rifle and another with his fusion blaster. Fire Warriors joined in with their pulse rifles, and one more berzerker fell to the ground, shouting the name of Khorne even as his comrades coldly ran over his dying body. The kroots fired at chaos marines from the depths of the forest, killing one.
Fire Warriors were ready to shoot the Orks to pieces.

In the North, the Yellow and Green companies of Fire Warriors rained death on the Ork commandos and shootaboyz, killing three commandos and two boyz. The commandos lost their morale and fell back, but regained their courage when they met the shootaboyz.

The Salamanders' Land Speeder with its shaken crew turned its tail and fled to the cover of the ruins. Tactical squad tried to punish the Orks. One of the gretchin took a bolt instead of the larger greenskins, but one real Ork fell as well. The terminators shot another. The other tactical squad turned to nail the greenskins in crossfire. One more Ork and gretchin slumped to the ground. Devastators joined in. Multi-melta, missile launcher and lascannon only managed to kill a bunch of gretchin from the front of the Ork lines. Plasma cannon, however, burnt two Orks and one gretchin to cinder.

The Salamander terminators turned to help the command squad against the Ork bikes and charged. All three remaining bikes fell to power weapons and thunder hammer blows.
Round III

Tau won the initiative. The floating hammerhead tank turned its enormous rail cannon towards the Chaos marines that had been forced to slump together between a hill and an ancient piece of unknown machinery. A perfect spot for heavy ordnance. However, the tank's crew must still have been shaken by the earlier lascannon shots, as the submunition disappeared somewhere behind the ruins harmlessly. The desperate tank crew tried to correct the mistake with smart missiles, but only one berzerker fell. The commander of the Tau army in his crisis suit killed one chaos marine on the hill with his plasma rifle, while the other crisis suits tried in vain to take out the berzerkers. Fire warriors and kroots wasted their ammo, too. The power armour of the berzerkers must have been under the blessings of their chaos god today.

On the Northern front the Tau had more luck. The green company of Fire Warriors fired their pulse rifles and carbines at the rapidly approaching Ork wartrukk. The vehicle was hit near its fuel tank and exploded in spectacular fireworks that sent shrapnel flying all over. Several of the nearby Ork shootaboyz and commandos perished with pieces of metal burrowing into their flesh. One of the Orks was neatly decapitated by a wildly flying tooth gear from the trukk. The yellow company of Fire warriors tried to finish the carnage. Three more greenskins went down. The battle seemed to go well for the Tau.

But then the Tau commander received grave news over the comm-link. The lumbering chaos obliterators had managed to get a line of fire at the thinner side armour of the Hammerhead tank, and destroyed it with several well-aimed lascannon shots. At the same time, the berzerkers, frothing at the mouth with incomprehensible war cries, plunged themselves towards the kroots hiding in the woods. Their attack was supported by the chaos marines, who killed one of the trusty mercenaries. The other chaos marines on the hilltop fired upon the crisis suits, but the armour held. The chaos terminators joined in, wounding the Tau inside the suit.
Berzerkers were anxious to attack.

The berzerkers charged the kroots. The alien mercenaries were prepared to meet them, and struck first from the depts of the forest, killing two of the maniacs. The remaining four did not stand idle in their rage, slaying two kroots for each berzerker killed.

To the East, the Salamanders had decided to finish the Orks once and for all. The terminators and the command squad fired their storm bolters at the vile greenskins. Three large Orks were killed. The tactical squad joined in, when suddenly the plasma cannon overheated. The release of ultra-heated gases would have killed a normal man, but the Space marines are not normal men. The Salamander warrior's armour was slightly charred, but he kept on fighting, while trying to cool down his weapon at the same time. Despite small mishap with the plasma cannon, two Orks and one gretchin lost their lives. The second tactical squad kept the greenskins in crossfire, killing one more Ork and gretchin. Finally, the land sweeper swooped down on the Orks, but its multi-melta missed the target, only scorching the already burnt ground.

While the rest of the Salamander army was busy punishing the Orks, the devastator squad turned its attention towards the chaos Terminators. The bolter shells were easily deflected by the thick armour plates, but lascannon and plasma cannon bit harder, killing two of the mean chaos traitors. The rest didn't even flinch, not because of the courage given by nobility, but obviously because of their hatred for everyone else's lives but their own.

To the North, the Ork shootaboyz and commandos were still trying to pull their ranks together after the explosion of the wartrukk. They fired desperately at the Tau Fire warriors, but without effect. Meanwhile, the gretchin were surprising their slaver with unusual accuracy when they fired at the Salamanders' tactical squad. A marine caught a bullet in his ear and fell. The Ork warboss spat out a string of curses when he was out-done by the pitiful wretches as the bullets from his big shoota bounced off the Salamanders' power armour.

The Orks finally got close enough to the Salamanders' tactical squad to put down their shootas and pull out the trusty choppas instead. The greenskins charged the marines with a resounding "Waaaagh!" Three marines were hacked to pieces, and only one Ork fell. The remaining Salamanders decided it was better to retreat, leaving the Orks free to advance towards the Terminators.
Round IV

The twin suns of Altaros IV had almost reached mid-sky. The Salamanders had the initiative.

The remains of the Salamanders' first tactical squad fired at the gretchin. Two fell down, shrieking miserably. Command squad joined in, killing three more. The Land Speeder caught the Ork warbuggy in its sights and fired the multi-melta. The buggy turned into a molten piece of steaming metal. This was too much for the remaining gretchin, who vanished in the shrubbery.

The second tactical squad had advanced close to the mystical power obelisk in the middle of the battlefield, and caught a first sight of the Tau Fire Warriors. Without question, the space marines opened fire on the aliens in their battle suits. Two aliens fell, including what looked like a squad leader. Meanwhile, the devastators tried to finish off the chaos terminators, but the weapon gods were not with the Salamanders this time. Bolter fire was easily deflected, and multi-melta, lascannon and plasma cannon all missed their targets. Only the krak missile from missile launcher found its target, but even it hardly scratched the surface of the ancient exo-armour.

In close combat, the two remaining Salamander terminators managed to kill three Orks. Two had their craniums burst apart by thunder hammer.

The situation was rapidly turning bad for the Tau. Having destroyed their primary target, the obliterators now turned their attention on the Fire Warriors. The lascannons morphed into heavy bolters, raining death on the Tau. Five Fire Warriors from the blue company fell. One more was killed by the chaos marines. A chaos rocket launcher fired a krak missile at one of the crisis suits, bursting it open and killing the Tau inside. The Chosen and the Chaos Lord in their terminator armours paid back to the Salamander devastators, killing two.

The berzerkers had no need to run any more. The kroots no longer had safety in the woods, and the devotees of Khorne could revel in the slaughter. Five kroots were massacred without being able to cause any damage to the berzerkers. The two remaining mercenaries decided that no amount of money the Tau could pay them was worthy of this and retreated. The berzerkers let the cowardly aliens run, and turned towards a fresh target. The Fire Warriors of the blue company nearly soiled their battle suits when four blood-soaked berzerkers emerged from the forest brandishing their chain-axes.

Yellow company was doing somewhat better. They fired at the Orks hiding bushes, killing one. The commander in his crisis suit fired his plasma rifle and fusion blaster at the chaos terminators, killing two of the remaining Chosen bodyguards. The Chaos Lord was enraged.

Green company, having lost its squad leader, opened fire on the Salamanders. Three marines were killed by the unexpectedly powerful pulse rifles and pulse carbines. The remaining veteran sergeant had never before encountered anything quite like it, and almost felt glad all his men had died. At least now no one would see his shame as he had to drap to all fours, trying to find some cover among the grass.
Suddenly, four berzerkers emerged from the woods where the kroot had been.

Blue company tried to fight back the raging berzerkers, but without avail. It was as if the red-clad fiends were playing with them. While three blocked the frantic blows of the Tau with their axes, the fourth one, slightly behind, casually picked up a rock and threw it at a Tau warrior, with daemonic strength and accuracy. The rock pierced the sensor array of the hapless Fire Warrior's helmet and dug its way to his brain through the eye. This was too much for the rest of the company. As one the remaining five Fire Warriors fled the battlefield. The berzerkers began to advance towards the yellow company.
The Orks wanted the blood of the Salamanders.

The Ork slaver pounded his whip frantically on the ground, shouting threats to any of the worthless little green shits that didn't come out right now. Reluctantly, the remaining gretchin came out of hiding and resumed battle. They were still too shaken to inflict any casualties on the Salamanders' command squad, though. The shootaboyz were more effective, killing four Fire Warriors. Finally, the Ork warboss himself grew tired of the inefficiency of his subordinates and commanded the Orks to assault the two remaining Salamander terminators. Their mighty blows tore through the ceramite carapace, flesh and bone alike. The Salamanders could not believe their eyes as they saw their most esteemed warriors being brutally ripped apart.
Round V

Salamanders won the initiative again.

The Land Speeder spotted a large shape hovering above the battlefield near the power obelisk and opened fire. The Tau commander's force field held, though, and he was unharmed. His Fire warriors were less lucky, though, as the devastators turned their heavy weapons on them. Six warriors perished, leaving only two.

The Salamanders' command squad avenged the lost terminators, wounding the Ork warboss. A last shot of the plasma pistol finished the job, and the enormous Ork fell to the ground. Two gretchin died in close combat.

The two remaining fire warriors of the green company tried to bring down the Salamander skimmer, but its armour held. Crisis suit turned its missile pod towards the Salamander devastators, but missing the target. Tau commander turned his weapons on the lone veteran sergeant crawling in the grass, firing his weapons three times at the marine. Three times only grass and bushes went up in smoke.

A sudden cry of pain on the comm-link alarmed the commander. The Orks had managed to wound the other crisis suit. A moment later, a short burst of static, and then silence. The Orks' rockets had finished the job.

The yellow company found itself between the rock and the hard place. On one side were the Orks, and now there were four berzerkers running towards them. The red-clad maniacs were still too far to use their axes, but this time they had cooled down enough to remember their bolt pistols. One Fire Warrior fell to a shot. Green company was no better off. The chaos marines shot down the two remaining warriors.

The obliterators morphed their arms into lascannons again, and fired three bright beams at the Salamander Land Speeder. This was too much for the skimmer, which was brought down, nearly crushing the lone veteran sergeant beneath its smoking wreck of a hull.

continued..

The battle had raged all day. The shadows had already started to grow longer, as the afternoon suns started to descent towards the horizon. Tau won the initiative.

The yellow company tried to fire upon the too rapidly advancing berzerkers, but once again the power armour proved its worth, and the maniacs only laughed at the feeble attempt to bring them down. Khorne had already been pleased with blood and skulls, and he surely would not let his worshippers go down now.

Tau commander looked around. He could see the smouldering remains of the crisis suit and the pitiful remains of the green company. The most immediate threat, however, seemed to be the Chaos Lord in his terminator armour. The former space marine looked at him with rage glowing in his eyes, and sparks running up and down his lighting claw, twitching with anticipation to run the things down the Tau commander's throat. Taking no chance, the Tau commander fired his weapons at the chaos lord. He could see holes being ripped to the thick carapace and blood and pieces of flesh pouring out, but the chaos Lord was driven by powers that go beyond a mere mortal. He merely flinched and snarled at injuries that would have reduced a lesser man into quivering blobs of flesh. The Tau commander looked in awe and fear, when suddenly he himself felt his armour give up and pieces of metal tear into his flesh. The obliterators had morphed their arms into autocannons and fired a salvo of heavy slugs at the crisis suit. The commander bit his teeth in pain. If that had been a lascannon shot, he would have been vaporised. He fired the jump boosters in his suit, taking him away from the Chaos Lord. He would not survive a close combat with him.

Things weren't any better for the remaining Fire Warriors. They got caught in a crossfire between the chaos marines and the frustrated Chaos Lord. The cowardly Tau commander had flown too far for close combat, and behind the power obelisk. Two Fire Warriors were killed by bolter shots right before the berzerkers charged into their midst. The remaining warriors were massacred in a frenzy of blood. The Tau commander closed his eyes. The battle had started so well, but now he was all alone, wounded, and surrounded by enemies at all sides. There would be no songs to mark his demise.

Almost as a reply to his thoughts, he was hit again. The Salamander commander had fired his storm bolter with astonishing accuracy, and the bolts pierced in through a weak spot in the already damaged suit. Pain washed over the Tau commander. He could feel his death hovering nearby.

The Salamander's devastator squad had lost sight of the Tau crisis suit as the commander had moved behind the power obelisk. Likewise, the Chaos Lord was nowhere to be seen, so they turned their heavy weapons against the despicable chaos marines again. Three chaos marines were struck down by lascannon, missiles and multi-melta. The two remaining members of the squad decided to live to fight another day and started to retreat.

The remains of the first Salamander tactical squad were still locked in close combat with the Ork slaver, his squigg helper, and their lone gretchin. The marines managed to kill the smallest greenskin, and this was finally too much for the now lone slaver, who turned and fled.

In the North, the Ork shootaboyz and remaining commandos had come out of the forest when the last Tau Fire Warriors had died. Now they turned their weapons on the Tau commander that was hovering in the air beside the power obelisk. A rocket found its target and the Tau commander's crisis suit exploded in a flash of fire, smoke and blood. The Tau army had been annihilated.
Round VII

The suns were now starting to set. The battle had been long and furious, but now it was nearing its end. Chaos had the initiative.

Chaos obliterators lurched beside the power obelisk, spotted the lone Salamander sergeant hiding near the wreck of the Land Speeder, and vaporised him with well-aimed lascannon shots. The berzerkers, having wiped out the Tau, now turned their blood-thirsty eyes towards the Orks and charged. Seven greenskins were hacked to pieces, and the rest fled. The retreating Orks tried to balance the score by shooting at the berzerkers, but the maniacs' power armours held still.
Chaos Lord and obliterators were standing by the power obelisk.

Salamanders' devastator squad continued pounding the chaos marines. Three died to a plasma cannon blast. Finally, Khorne reminded the berzerkers not to get too cocky by allowing a bolt from the Salamanders' command squad to find its way through the celebrating berzerkers' armour, killing one. The three surviving berzerkers were unlikely to learn the lesson, though.

The Chaos Lord in his terminator armour and with obliterators at his side secured the power obelisk just as the suns set behind the horizon. The forces of Chaos had won the battle of Altaros IV.

P.S. change the 1 in /battlereport1 to a 2 or a 3 for different battle reports.

Congrats! Battle reports are fun, especially those detailed ones. I'm working on one at the moment, and I hope it will attract more attention than this one. Especially that it's one of the core aspects of the wargaming hobby.
But to make a battle with four sides... Man, this is crazy. Like taken from a Manowar song.

Chaos Master,

What it is missing is PICs to back up all of that beautiful writing. We are Warriors of Chaos, and thus easily distracted without a visual aid. Many of the younger players will simply cry: TL;DR...
I liked it anyway: +1 karma for your in-depth batrep and fluff. With your permission I would like to add this to the stickied BatReps.

TTFN,
Ged
