Default Experience with new 1ksons

I trotted my army down to the local independent GW retailer...and discovered that they had a copy of the new Chaos Codex. My army was still legal, so I immediately resolved to give it a game.

My army at 1850:

4 units of 8 ksons + 1 sorcerer w/Bolt of Change
2 units of 7 ksons + 1 sorcerer w/Bolt of Change
Ahriman!

My enemy:

3 units of 5 terminators with 2 assault cannons each
4 Space Marine 5 man squads w/lascannons
1 Dread
2 Landspeeders

We got Alpha Cleanse

I advanced into the rain of fire, retaliating with my AP 3 bolters and shrugging off his rends with my invulnerable saves. The only problem I had was that I couldn't make an armor save, so I'd get 3 rends...and then take 3 wounds from the non-rends. Ah well. At games end I only had one scoring unit left, contesting his quarter, but one of his skimmers had darted out and taken another quarter (early shooting took out its assault cannon, but I couldn't immobilize or destroy it) He had 2 space marine squads, the dread and the damaged skimmer left, I had a unit still above half. So I lost pretty comprehensively.


Observations:

The psychic Hood was completely brutal. Ahriman and the 6 sorcerers had to roll to beat the hood...make their checks, roll to hit and roll to wound. 4 rolls to shoot one fricking blast, or 5 if they had an invulnerable save.

Ahriman is a monster, he killed both of their HQ's in H2H combat, and smoked a bunch of terminators, spawning a few.

Power fists aren't so scary when you have 4+ invul, same goes for lascannons/etc.

Warptime's influence can't be overrated. If you wanted ksons in CC now, I'd say the warptime'd asp. Sorc with his force weapon is almost the equal of the old powerfist champs.

And how does a squad of the "new" Sons stack up points-wise versus an "old" squad of Sons? (Assuming 8 marines, Sorceror, and Bolt of Change)

As it seems my copy of the Codex was sent to Ohio by UPS :'(...

Uh-oh, you just made someone in Ohio very happy .

I have a question though, I never cleared this one up, do 1k sons have to take psychic tests now?

Yes we have to take a psychic tests now but we can take 2 psychc powers now and the commanders can take 3 and 1k sons points is 24-1=?points well i can tell you that would be copy right and the squad lader is 6x10=? well expencive but ap3 bolter gun and 4 pulse iv save make up for it. if you are wondering why i know this i have 3 new codex's ;D

The new Ksons are not as expensive as the old ones were, but the asp. champ is now an asp. Sorcerer, who is very very expensive, and the BoC is as expensive as many other heavy weapons. Overall, a unit of 8 ksons and 1 asp Sorc w/bolt of change and melta-bombs is between 250 and 300 points.

You need to adjust to the fact that you don't have the 4 attack powerfist champ anymore, as well as the fact that the ksons are the only Chaos Space marines who don't supplement their bolters with bolt pistol + CCW. This essentially means that you need to stay out of combat with enemy assault troops.

To get value out of this unit it needs to be constantly shooting at enemies with 3+ armor saves. It is better at taking heavy weapons fire, but worse at taking dakka than it used to be.
