Default i need some help starting chaos....

as t he title suggests, i am planning on starting chaos but i cant seem to come up with an army list that i like.

i am looking at doing a stand and shoot type army with a strong counter charge element.


obviously this would not work against all oponents (thinking tau battlesuits as an example) so i would need to be able to move with reletive speed to engage the enemy as well (so some transports will probably be needed)


every time i look at the new codex i just go "thousands sons for the win!!!" and make a list based on them (and then realise that i have about 30 men for 1500 pts :). then i notice something else that i like and go for that (rinse and repeat :)

i did like the idea of having the favoured numbers of units (no benefit, but it is cool ) say - 8 bezerkers, 9 Rubrics, 7 Plague marines, 6 noise marines but i cant really build a list around that either.


im getting myself all confused about it.

can anyone offer any pointers as to what might work for 1000-1500ish points???


(BTW - i am NOT looking for a beardy list, i am looking for a casual, fun to use list)

I feel your pain, man. I feel like I only just last night put together a list that I'm happy with and can start building up for the codex release.

However, I'm going for a more assault/mid-range-shooting army - Chosen, raptors and plague marines in rhinos really forming the core of my army.

How seriously are you taking the thousand sons thing? Ie. are you wanting to give everything else in the army the MoT? And what are the "other things" that catch your attention most?

Call me sacrilegious but I don't care at all about the sacred numbers. I always thought it was a stupid and arbitrary idea. Fluffy to me was just taking a whole Thousand Sons army, shortcomings and all. Compared to how the new codex is effectively doing away with that very idea, Sacred numbers should be the least of our concerns.

Anyway, back to your list. Thousand Sons are quite frankly hard to try and build an all-comers list around. That's just gonna be a fact about them. They'll be devastating against assault oriented Loyalist and Chaos marines, though.

But if you're worried about not being versatile enough, I'd consider something else. I think death guard will be a great foundation for a more rounded list.

I say the most versatile list would be the Emperor's Children actually. The mark is cheaper and the Noise Marines are very shooting to use. They can either go shooty with alot of Emperor's Children, or just send them all in rhinos and stuff to chop people to death with their high initiative or even both.

Hey 30 man for a 1500pts army is a lot of troops. My Death Guard stands in at 40-ish at 1750 pts with the instructions from the new codex (including tanks). And they are just a rather skeletal at that.

like i said, my chaos will be purely for fun - and i think the sacred numbers make for a cool theme to an army


i dont even inted to win as such witht is army, i just want to have a laugh.

im trying to make a new sort of army, these are what i have:

Specialised - eldar
pure assault - tyranids (i have 3 ranged weapons for 1500pts )
pure shooty - tau
pure assault/lots of shooty - blood angels (mechanised kinda)
close range shooting/assault - sisters of battle, grey knights
ultimate annoyance - radical daemonhunters (daemonhosts, plasma weaponry, callidus - you name it )


what i really want is a massive firebase (such as obliteators/havocs) supported by vehicles (complicated as they are mostly HS as well) and a good counter assault element (daemonprince, terminators/land raider, chosen etc)

but i'll post a list as soon as i come up with one :

That's not really true. If by shooty you mean arming them with sonic blasters then they become more expensive than Plague Marines. And the blastmaster has skyrocketed in price (although it definitely kicks arse). And Noise marines don't stand a chance against Plague marines in close combat.

I like Noise Marines. My current codex army is composed of almost equal parts Noise marines and Plague marines. But I think the Plague marines come out better in the new codex. You'll notice I also said that Plague marines can form a great foundation in the new codex. I'm not talking about a fluffy death guard army. I'm talking about plague marines backed up by a range of heavy weapons and fast attack options. In the context of this sort of army, you can give plagues a quite particular role that caters exactly to their advantages; get them to an objective and see if the enemy can shift them. Noise marines on the other hand are, as you say, more versatile in themselves, they'll outshoot and outfight an ordinary marine, but at the same time they will be outnumbered and without things like t4(5), feel no pain and blight grenades, they'll pay for that.

I've gone Khornate with my army, why? Because to me Khorne is the raw embodiment of what Chaos is, selfish, bloodthirsty and always killing something.

For my list I've gone quite heavy on the C.C. units, but I've also invested in firepower, giving my army quite a good balance. Here is my list which I wrote yesterday:

1000pts Chaos Space Marines

H.Q

Chaos Lord = 140pts
- Terminator Armour.
- Twin Lightning-Claws.
- Mark of Khorne.

Elites

Chaos Terminators = 225pts
1 x Chaos Terminator Icon of Khorne.
1 x Chaos Terminator Reaper Autocannon.
2 x Chaos Terminators Powerfists.
1 x Chaos Terminator.

Troops

Khorne Berzerkers = 198pts
1 x Skull Champion Power Weapon.
7 x Khorne Berzerkers.

Khorne Berzerkers = 198pts
1 x Skull Champion Power Weapon.
7 x Khorne Berzerkers.

Heavy Support

1 x Obliterator = 75pts

1 x Chaos Defiler = 150pts.
2 x Extra Close Combat Arms.

I bought a battle force, mega force, advanced order thing, 5 havocs, 5 termies, 5 poss, a dread and 20 raptors now this obviously is a rediculous army, pick up some obbliterators and you have a full list of about 4000 points, it may seem rediculous but this is what i bought if you can find a discount mini site the mega force and battle force are quite cheap and those two are good starting points. you have 40 troops, 6 bikes, 2 rhinos, and a defiler, For about $230 canadian shipped. All you need to worry about is an hq choice.

khornate bikers are the way to go turbo boost em up and follow up with a good rush of berzerkers in rhinos (risky but worth it) with a predator and oblits to give them covering fire.

all in all great fun to use with the old codex. new codex i would do the same basic thing only add some raptors that have MoK.
