Default Sounds of a Noise marine weaponry.

How does a Sonic weaponry sounds like? Is it like those big booms and very high pitched music till people close their ears or those musical melody the blows your brains out?

Crisis_Vyper,

Good question. In the fluff, the Warp Scream is why the Slaneeshi boys carry the slogan "Noise Marines." It's a terrible sound that upsets all around them, but it's pure pleasure to the Noise Marine. Sonic weapons on the other hand, probably sound a lot like it and are merely focused from a weapon. What it sounds like, I haven't the slightest idea what GW's fluff writers had in mind, but when I think of damaging sound attacks, I think of very low pitch, large wave bands of sound, that are hard to actually hear, but are devastating in terms of resonance. I would imagine it sounds a lot like a rolling thunder, but even deeper and deafening. A silent deafness for example is what I would imagine (ie: so loud, yet unregistered, that it muffles the sounds from the rest of the battle field and they know they're about to be enveloped by a very large sound wave, just like a whiplash... *CraCK!*).

But that's just my thoughts, there may be real examples somewhere for you

Cheers!

Hm..........but doesn't sound marine like the pleasure of tormenting their enemies? Even in the heat of battle?

Yes, that's what the Warp Scream is; It's a terrible sound that effects all their foes around them. In game terms, it lowers their initiative by 1, as they are so disturbed by the terrible sound. The Noise Marines take pleasure from it at the same time.

Cheers!

Shooting wise, they're pretty much all sonic based. Doom Sirens, Sonic Blasters and Blast Masters. Close combat is another story of course and they still use non-sonic weaponry too. It's not that deep actually, just an aesthetic way to look at more potent bolters and missile launchers, etc

Cheers!

Hm........one question. Why are they only 'turned on' by loud noises?

I'm unsure as I don't know all of the fluff and history for little details like that.
Maybe someone else knows and can chime in to help you there

Cheers!

My guess, 'though it isn't really stated outright anywhere in the fluff as I can find it, is that the "Noise Marine" weapons use Infrasound and Ultrasound to generate harmonic vibrations in the target, to cause damage.

If you can cause enough of a shockwave in the air nearby, perhaps you can cause rupturing in organic or fine electronic targets, much the way that "wind of the ball" would kill soldiers if a cannonball passed too close to them. [Few cannon balls ever actually _hit_ anyone, but if it passed within a couple of feet from you, the "wind of the ball" would cause internal hemmorhaging, and likely death.]

In a report by Ambroise Pare, acting as surgeon on the way to Boulogne in 1545, "the enemy who were in the Tour d`Ordre fired a cannon against us, thinking to kill two men-at-arms who had stopped to talk together. It happened that the ball passed quite close to one of them, which threw him to the ground, and it was thought the ball had touched him, which it did not; but only the wind of the ball full against his corselet, with such force that all the outer part of his thigh became livid and black, and he could hardly stand. I dressed him, and made diverse scarifications to let out the bruised blood made by the wind of the ball"...

At any rate, historical comparisons aside, within the 40k milieu it seems fairly likely that both ultrasound and infrasound comprise the crucial parts of the Noise Marine weaponry, with the Warp Scream consisting primarily of audible pitch for its emotional response effect [although ultrasound and infrasound seem to have effect on human behaviour, despite being out of the audible range].
