Default Death of a Salesman

That is the title of a play I'm studying for my GCSE exam next year. Has anybody else seen it/read it? If so, what did you think of it?

Erm, no, not really...and also it is very wrong in places!

Really some of the stuff they give us to study for GCSE is utter rubbish. Oh well, at least it is better than Shakespeare I guess...

Better than Shakespeare!?!?!

Must not flame....must not flame....

Ah, back under control.* Shakespeare's plays are great (there is a reason why they're so popular) when watched (not read.)
Anyway, Death of a Salesman.* I don't think it's that bad.* It raises many interesting questions.* It sounds 'wrong' as you put it because it was written in the 1940s and thus the language is not quite geared towards 15 year old adolescant males who will twist anything they can to make it sound 'wrong' (and thus very funny.)* This problem can be augmented if you have a weak teacher...

To be honest, although it's not the most wonderfully interesting thing I've read I quite like it.* What I don't like is the questions we have to do on them, such as:

Write down Bernard's thoughts after his conversation with Willy.* You can start this way: 'I always knew all those years ago that Willy was going wrong.'

What?* What rubbish is this.* Firstly - no-one thinks in that way in neatly ordered and long ordered sentences,* secondly, how on Earth does this educate us and develop our minds (although you could argue that it trains us for being politicians by making us make up a load of waffle,) and thirdly, through out the whole conversation it's been blatantly obvious that Bernard doesn't really care about Willy and is altogether all to eager to forget about him once he leaves his presence making him rather unlikely to suddenly to break out in a huge moral, ethical and spiritual debate within himself about Willy's mental breakdown.

Also, I've heard in a survay that on average men think about sex every five minutes.* Should I have him suddenly break off from Willy's problems and focus on something much more pleasant for a few seconds (just so I can show the examiners that i actually know something about the Male mind and psychology....

Not advised, examiners like you to talk rubbish.

I don't particularly need to know anything. I'd just like to know out of interest what you thought about it, whether you liked it etc.

i found it to be rather dull. there could have been better ways to characterize the family and neighbors. it as a trip to see, because the guy would visualise things from the past and change his conversations at the drop of a hat. it was mad.

Yep, it was mad. One things I kept thinking while reading it was - 'are we supposed to feel sympathy for this guy?' He's a complete nutcase!
