Default Kendo - Need Advice

I've been thinking about taking up Kendo sometime this year, and was wondering if anyone here did it? I can only find one Dojo in all of Oxfordshire and you have to be part of Oxford or Brookes Universities, or live locally to join!
I've been looking through their site and the BKA's site too and it looks pretty neat.
Trouble is, it looks like there's a hell of a lot that you have to learn before you can even start going, otherwise you risk causing offense by sitting or entering the Dojo incorrectly. :-X
Also, is it necessary (or compulsory??) to learn Iaido and Jodo if you want to take up Kendo, or all they all intergrated?

Ask Dizzy for some advice, he either did/or still does Kendo, probably best to talk to him over email or msn as he is never on now. I'll make sure to ask him for you though, hey Rezzy, where do you live? I'm almost in Oxfordshire...

Kendo is derived from the Samurai swordsmanship.
They used to use swords, but people died too often, so know they use 'sticks', yeah. They're called Bokkens (sp?).
Not to be confused with Jodo, which also uses wooden pole weapons.

Thanks 42. I live about 14 miles from Oxford...

Derived from swordsmanship...hmm, I thought it was derived from fishermen who defended themselves and their days catchings with their poles...probably thinking of something slightly different.

Oh and I live about 2 miles from Thame, know it? A village called Haddenham.

According to a few things I read on the net it was the sword-masters refusing to stop training Samurai even once they became obsolete due to gunpowder. I could be wrong though.

I know Thame yeah, never heard of Haddenham though. :P
Heard of Bicester?

hmmm...i can lend one piece of advice: if you put a 30 cm steel rod in the bottom, it'll make it properly weighted and balanced...dunno how relevant you'll find that, but hey

Sounds good thanks BloodiedFangs, although I could get into trouble by putting metal into a wooden weapon. ;D

don't worry, the piece of steel doesn't move, so it doesn't really become a hazard...it just adds some weight and balance...we used to same trick when i was learning english sword-fighting (bamboo is a lot safer than steel ...but they still wanted us to actually be able to use steel weapons and know how they felt, so that's what we did)
