Default RC Helicopters = Fun

One of the guys at my shop brought in an RC helicopter and it seemed fun so I bought one of my own. Nothing expensive, just a cheapy $50 one from amazon. I've had quite a lot of fun with it, it's pretty durable. It's fallen down my stairs a bunch of time and hit a lot of stuff but it still flies great. It's a blast to fly, I was really surprised at how entertaining it is. Here are a few pics of it in the woods behind my house.

I recently decided to upgrade and bought a bigger one that is more suitable for outdoor flying. I spend $200 on this one and although I've only had it for two days I've been enjoying it. It's a lot harder to fly than the first one though.

Pics are a little blurry because it's hard to keep this thing steady outside if there is a breeze. I'll get some pictures of the other one tomorrow.

That is something I have always wanted to get into, but always thought it might be too expensive. What does the $200.00 run off of?

Both of them are battery powered. The smaller one runs for about 8-10 minutes and the larger one runs around 15 minutes.

1) Add camera
2) Add some kind of projectile launcher
3) ???
4) PROFIT!!!

I always stare at the RC kiddy helicopters at the toy store and wonder just what the cashier would think if I bought something labeled "Ages 5+"

Then I realize that I'm already standing in a toy store...

I have a smaller version of that chinook. It's about 8 inches long and very very fun to play with.

I've seen some people tape bottle rockets to them and shoot stuff. I had an idea for a CO2 launcher. They can both lift a decent amoung of weight, so if I wasn't lazy and knew where in Germany to get the parts I could easily build a small launcher capable of shooting airsoft pellets or something.

But in the end I'm much too lazy for that, it's just the mechanical engineer inside me trying to get out again. Going to school for something long enough changes the way you think.

...I'm not sure if that was meant to sound dirty or if there's just something wrong with me.

It's not my fault if your dirty dirty mind misreads a perfectly innocent helicopter based comment :P

I bet you could rig up something with a doorbell as the activator. I had a friend do it all the time in paintball, with grenades and paint landminds.
