You know, I've always rooted for Pirates in the age old Internet War, but holy hell, this is all kinds of awesome.

Hey Black uniforms and we all know Good Guys where black! (same colour of mine. I got a third degree Black belt back when I was younger. Added 50 pounds to my waste though, so the third degree is about useless at the moment).

I wonder if they are really ninjas though. Look like Karate to me. True Ninjitsu schools are hard to find. My master got his 1st Black belt in Black Dragon through John Keehan who was one crazy ass SOB.

It annoys me that any person who has had some martial arts training that included a trivial amount of ninjitsu is called a ninja by people who have no idea what they're talking about! Ninjas were a very secretive order of professional assassins. That means they killed people. If you just study their ancient combat art, even if you are actually studying their techniques (which would be hard to confirm since secretive societies don't keep records), that does not make you a ninja!

From the tiny picture, I can't tell much about the style they're using, but it looks awfully formal and uniform. The way the students are posing kinda suggests to me that they're, well, posers! I have studied martial arts for something like 15 years and the vast majority of schools that do uniforms teach a sport rather than any form of combat. The fact that they ran out screaming and everything suggests that they don't have a lot of sense. Sure, it worked, but it could have gone badly for any of them, including the guy they were rescuing. If any of the attackers were packing a weapon, even a small knife, they would have been far more likely to draw it when outnumbered than when they had a 3 to 1 advantage. Once the knife appears, all kinds of bad things can happen and there is no margin for error. Students of practical self-defense would know this and probably would not run screaming into the fight! Now, the element of surprise absolutely has its place in self defense, but running in screaming like that is a good way to earn yourself a Darwin Award.

Whether the art they studied is in any way practical or has anything to do with ninjitsu, I can't say. Most martial arts use most several stances, and many don't have official stances at all. It's about mobility, not posing, after all. Unless a photograph of a martial artist involves a particularly obvious technique (Capoeira or Silat, for example) or a particular starting position like some of Judo, it's pretty hard to tell from a static image what they're studying.

Before you start to criticize too much I'll grab the original article. The BBC one was very brief and had no substance in it.

http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/men-in-bla...0519-vfc5.html

There is the article from the original Australian source, and even includes a video

Nevertheless, it was probably the last thing on those criminals minds when they assaulted that exchange student. Seeing 20 guys in ninja garb come running out of a place that teaches the art on ninjutsu would be pretty frightening.

Reminds me of the story here when two guys attempted to rob a Pub in my home city only to be sprung by a mob of bikers having their monthly club meeting in the Pub's conference room.

Here is that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH8kx...eature=related note the guys who grab the chairs.

What about the guys who tried to mug a couple of girls out one night, and it turned out they were cage fighters in drag....
