I think it's fake, because why does every room have a red light in it?

Well, its obviously a planned event, be it computer controlled or person. So they've obviously planned for it.

I'm more inclined to think it's a fake, possible computer generated trickery in an video editing program, but the idea is just Dan (Dan == awesome).

There were camera flashes during the video, making me think that it's probably not a fake (or it's a very good one).
I'd say it must have been computer controlled, two lamps (one red one white) in each room connected to a central thing. Very clever. Very awesome. |

It doesn't have to be fake though, not really that difficult to do.
It would just be like reading music. You've got the on/off intervals written down in front of you, you count along and when it comes up to you, you turn the light on for however long it indicates then off again, you wouldn't need to see what the other rooms are doing if you've got some kind of timer for everyone to follow. |

That is fantastic, but I'm pretty sure it's automated and real. There's another link nearby that might not be the same building, but the animation is much fancier and faster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxxWGj2GAD4
That one has a title page that shows how it was done with a computer chip. At least, I think that's what it is describing. It's in Polish! Anyway, it wouldn't be all that hard to do. The dorm building is probably networked anyway, so the light controllers in each room could connect to the computer that is giving orders to turn on and turn off the switches. It wouldn't even have to be done with room lights. A college project's worth of electrical engineering students could fairly easily wire up a small circuit board to a network interface and contacts to switch a couple of flood lights. I admit that it would not be trivial to get a production like that to run smoothly. You have to make sure that all the light gadgets (whatever they are) are working properly, connected to the controller computer, and configured for the right room. It would be painfully obvious if any of them were configured wrong! |
