Default What's your job?

I was just wondering what other members' jobs are?

I'm a draftsman for a civil engineering firm. By that I mean I draw [with autocad] houses, sanitary systems, bridges, trailer pads, and generally attempt to make anyone building anything not get fined massive amounts of money, while they think I'm just trying to make their life more difficult. I also do site visits and such to find soil percolation rates, get soil samples, see that the people have adhered to what I drew, and write completion notices for the county they are in.

There are other parts of my job, such as: I have drawn a mall, a dam (most work a person can possibly do, since it involves DEC and army corp of engineers), drawn 4 campgrounds with all of their lots, 2 subdivisions, 7 trailer parks, and a few resteraunts.

Is this one of those threads which is a round about way to trumpet yourself?

Aahhhh nobody needs to answer that.

Well as...some of you? probably know, I'm a full time university student. My part time job is kind of hard to explain. I work at a law firm. Technically I could be called both paralegal and secretary but they'd both be kind of misleading.

Paralegal assumes a decent amount of legal knowledge and research, which I do not have/do. Secretary assumes a lot of reception/admin, which I also do not do.

Basically I do a fair bit of work on conveyancing, which is, the exchange of property, and the legal side involved with that. We actually do have a dedicated conveyancer in our law firm, myself and another guy are basically his staff and men on the ground. Because this is a sector which requires a LOT of running around between like maybe ten to twelve spots in the city. I do a lot of property settlements, which is basically the final formal exchange of the property (usually involving four sides, vendor's and purchaser's solicitors and incoming and outgoing banks). And these settlements takes place in basically designated spots all around the city (usually in some fairly large rooms hired by banks or legal outsourcing firms) which has just scores of people going in and out at all times and everybody's shouting and walking about and it's all rather menial but not boring.

INTERESTINGLY a bit of my personal views are formed....or at least strengthened, by this job. This job requires people to deal on frequent basis with both public and private companies, and it's pretty much where I learnt that, for the same job, there isn't a noticeable difference in efficiency/effectiveness between private and public companies/agencies. They're both varied, sometimes very efficient, sometimes completely Klkn. The Land Titles Office for example, is a public agency and it's one of the most efficient places I've ever been to. On the flip side, NAB, a big commercial bank, is spectacularly proficient at screwing up. And that's not mentioning the private Real Estate Agencies who it seems are getting paid just to Y'xauk up.

My theory is that efficiency isn't dependent on being private or publicly owned, because you still get fired from government jobs if you're just screwing up. It really depends on the work environment. If you're in an office exclusively dealing with huge legal firms and financial institutions then you're going to be efficient and focused. If you're in an office dealing with (sorry, generalizing here, no means to cause offense) an endless line of perpetually unemployed people, elderly with bad hearing and barely literate high school dropouts, then yes, it's going to be really disruptive to the work environment and you will not give a flying Y'xauk. I mean I've personally NEVER had trouble with "bureaucracy" or whatever people complain about (too many forms? or pre-requisites or all that) because if you're dealing with say, a bank or a financial broker or a law firm on a similar level, there'd be a certain amount of competence assumed (ie. finding the right forms and pre-requisites, either via a phone call beforehand or just looking up the government website).

I mean some very dumb people come in to the law firm and yes, we have to send them back after a half an hour drive because they didn't bring what we asked them to bring or do what we asked them to do. But for some reason when it's a private business people no longer cry about "bureaucracy". And unlike private businesses government agencies have everything they usually need from you WRITTEN ON THEIR WEBSITES.
