Default An honest answer question about your feelings regarding karma

This is just a question thats been running through my head for a little while now' When you go onto these forums and see someone with oh I dunno a minus 1-13 karma do you feel I dunno awkward/ Mistrustful? Superior? stuff like that, I hope im getting this across the right way so people can understand?

Me personally I dont use Karma to base off how I think people might be and I also never really look at the karma side of the account, Im usually reading or formulating a reply to the above poster

So yeah Im just wondering what other peoples 2 cents/pence/lira/roubles whatever was on this question?

Karma can be tricky, because the Negative karma could be due to a bad start in the forum and the person wised-up overtime, could be for a bad spell in his real life which transposed online or could be because the person is an D'yi and never learn.

So I don't really base myself on the karma, just on the person action (although if I don't know the person I might look up their post log to see where the got it)...and some people are simply part of my 'To beat with a 60Lb Halibut' list regardless of karma.

When I see somebody with good karma I often let the bad things they might do slide, because obviously it can't just be their character since they've got good karma. Whenever I see negative karma though, of any number, I feel that any bad things they do are likely a reflection of a long-running habit (being that they have negative karma already), so I'm less likely to respect these people. Not always though, if they prove they're good people with bad karma, then I judge them strictly the way I know them.

I usually only look at Karma when I've seen a post that is either really bad or really good. This helps me get an idea of the persons standing in the long run.

I think Boneguard summed it up pretty well for me. Negative karma isn't necessarily created equal and the person has to be judged by what they are doing/saying at the time. Having said that, I do look at it if the person is really being an ass at the time, as it could be an indicator of a pattern of assdom.

I may look at someone's karma, but even so, I don't alter a reply to a post they may have posted because I respect everyone. 'Treat the people the way you want to be treated' is a phrase I've heard from somewhere, and that's the way I've followed ever since I've heard it.

We shouldn't judge people on positive karma, or negative karma, because we are all equals here.

Karma is not for use the members but for more for the Moderators and admins. Its shows them a quick summary of what you are like as a member.

My problem with Karma is when someone has say +50 karma and -14 Karma. So at -15 karma you are going up to see the man of TO in regards to being band. This is done on a case by case basis but to me it should be a hardline. People will say but he/she has +50 Karma they have done a lot of good here. However it takes a lot to get -15 karma it is not an easy task. Also if people know that if they have a large amount of +Karma that in the ned chances are you will be band but rather placed on warning. This to me makes a mockery of the Karma system and members of Tau Online. Just my 2 cents though.

I virtually ignore karma. I hate smiting people, as even though I know its just a number, but I dislike doing it.

As for karma, I like to use karma as a way of just saying "thanks" for what they have done.

It is a mostly subjective scoring system. It's not as subjective as postcount, but still. Don't make the mistake of using it as an objective measurement. Positive karma isn't necessarily an indicator of good behavior or even meaningful contribution (you can get it for answering the quizzes here). And Negative karma isn't always indicative of bad behavior.

I don't use it to inform any decision I make about another poster. I can do that just fine by talking to them.

I do use it sometimes... If you see a post from someone with High Karma, you know that A he is with the community for a long time, B that he can't be a total asshole, and C that he probably knows what he is talking about.

On the other hand, if you see a post from soneone with negative Karma... well...

But, even more important than Karma is proper spelling, capital letters and punctuation to me ^^

As a rule, I don't take posts from people who don't use basic grammar and punctuation seriously.

Cheers,
-Bone

PS: Oh, and for some people, Karma just doesn't work. Sidstyler, Wargamer and a few others are examples where the system just fails, imo.
