Default Shortfilm: Mankind is no Island

Tropfest is the world's largest short film festival/competition, originating in Sydney and held annually. In Sydney alone it draws yearly live crowds of 70,000 or so. Usually the finalist short films are made to almost a studio production standard, ie. very snazzy.

Anyways I was at the 2009 Sydney Tropfest yesterday night, and yeah, all the finalist films were quite exceptional, but really amongst the company and booze only a few stuck out.

This wasn't a finalist, but the winner of NY Tropfest 2008, and it was the film that stuck with me the most during the night. Compared to other short films hundreds to maybe over thousands of dollars of budget and equipment and fairly experienced TV and theatre actors, this was shot on a mobile phone, with no actors, with only a budget of $40.

The film maker is from Sydney (yes! in your FACE NY! ) and the title is
"Mankind is no Island", and I'd like to share this with all of you.

...................wow..........

Very Poinent. Very moving. Clever.

I think this film goes a long way to highlight those inderviduals who live neglected between all of us. Not just the homeless, but all those society admonishes responsibility for...

Applause for Jason van Genderen

Judging by the replies in this thread so far, clearly this film only really works for those already below the -4,-4 point on the political compass. :P

Just got a chance to watch it, and that was excellent. It was very compelling, the lack of speech added an emotional impact that I'm not sure would have been present given the medium.

Mongoose, are you sure it's a good idea to mistake silence for disapproval?

I don't USUALLY care about the homeless too much (with the notable exception of youth homelessness which I care about because that's often something you're forced to) because my reasoning is, Australia's social welfare system is more than adequate (and I think it is, overall), homelessness is a choice.

But damn, that video did change my perspectives on that a bit. I mean even if they are overall responsible for their predicament (maybe, maybe not, I don't know), they're not harming anybody and really shouldn't be treated as so subhuman as we are wont to do.

Icycool: I was joking. I just found it amusing the only two person in the thread were from the SD&D Pinko Brigade.

Wow... that was an extremely well done movie and was very thought provoking. Like Icy, I think that the substitution of text and symbols for dialogue made the film even more moving. The music was superb and fitted the film perfectly. A big kudos to Jason van Genderen.

That was brilliantly done. We were going t otry and enter something in tropfest one year, but our groups fallen apart so I don't think it'll happen anymore. Oh, and also because we could never come up with something quite that genius. My favourite part was the use of the mobile and very low budget. Proves that it's not money that'll win it for you, but a damn good idea.

Very powerful. Extremely well done film. The director knows what he is doing.

But as far as adding to the debate? Not at all. It's provoking giant emotional response, which is what films do, but that's not what helps people make good decisions.
