Default Ranking the Presidents

C-Span has released its annual survey of Presidential Historians for 2009. The historians are asked to rank the presidents in a number of categories with a total possible score of 1,000. The final list is a ranking from 1 to 42 of the most to least capable leaders of American history from a historian's perspective. Anyway, I though it was kinda cool to read through and it got me looking up some of the presidents I couldn't remember anything about. So I thought some of the other Americans (or anyone interested in American Presidents) on the board might enjoy looking though it as well.

On a side note my four fav. presidents are all in the top 10 (Lincoln, Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, and Reagan), so that was kinda cool too.

Ranking President's Name Score Overall
1 Abraham Lincoln 902
2 George Washington 854
3 Franklin D. Roosevelt 837
4 Theodore Roosevelt 781
5 Harry S. Truman 708

7 Thomas Jefferson 698
8 Dwight D. Eisenhower 689
9 Woodrow Wilson 683
10 Ronald Reagan 671
11 Lyndon B. Johnson 641
12 James K. Polk 606
13 Andrew Jackson 606
14 James Monroe 605
15 Bill Clinton 605
16 William McKinley 599
17 John Adams 545
18 George H. W. Bush 542
19 John Quincy Adams 542
20 James Madison 535
21 Grover Cleveland 523
22 Gerald R. Ford 509
23 Ulysses S. Grant 490

What's hilarious is that he's only 3 higher than a guy who died a month into his term.

What's that say about Pierce, Johnson, and Buchanan, who all came in below Harrison?

Well I don't know about the other two, but I heard that (Andrew) Johnson nearly got impeached for being just that awful a president.

After a quick bit of reading…

(these are both pre-Civil War presidents)

Pierce (14th), who served immediately before Buchanan, is credited with hastening the disruption of the Union. His policies although an attempt to calm the situation ended up making things much worse, so much so that the Democrats refused to nominate him for a second term instead going with Buchanan.

Buchanan (15th) was apparently politically oblivious to the realities of his time (1857-1861) and generally maintained a policy of political inactivity. Apparently, he simply waited around and hoped that everyone would start to get along. By the end of his term he wasn’t supported by the Democratic Party or the Republican Party.

After these two it was left to Lincoln to clean up the mess.

Lincoln got #1? WTF. :sadnshocked: More evidence that Americans have no understanding of their history whatsoever. The man destroyed the principles upon which our nation was founded. He took huge steps to federalize the country. He freed the slaves he didn't have any power to free and refused to free the ones he did have the power to free. Whatever....

I'm a little disappointed that Thomas Jefferson didn't make the top 5.

But my man FDR got in the top 3!

It is nice to see Nixon edging back up. Despite his general lack of ethics in campaigning, he did a lot of good as president.

Aureus, I don't disagree with what you've pointed out and I also have big problems with the federalization of the nation under Lincoln. However, I like him because he was one of the very few completely selfless presidents (IMHO) that this country ever had.

Aren't you missing someone?? Isn't Obama the 44th President?

Your list numbers 42 instead of 43 one would expect to see.

I Can understand that Obama isn't there, he just got into office and did do anything major...yet. But Who is so impopular that he didn't even made it in the list??
