Default Help? Please? I need to make a resume...

I'm applying for an internship and need to write a resume. Problem is, I have no clue how to do this. I've found plenty of examples and help on the internet, which would be helpful if I had work experience. The position is an internship at a think tank, and I haven't even finished my second year of high school. How the hell am I supposed to make a resume? I've never worked formally for a company, only tutored (quite successfully, though) on the side. I'm freaking out just a little bit.

Honestly, bust out the microsoft resume wizard. For an internship, they're not going to be expecting vast experience, but highlight what you do have. Hobbys definitely can be important for experience, and definitely put in the tutoring as well. Make sure to tailor your resume for your desired job, of course.

If you've got time, I highly suggest practicing by submitting resumes for jobs you don't want at all, and seeing what happens. =)

Here is a copy of my resume. A resume, should be about one page long. On average, and employer will look at a resume 10 seconds, before he/she decides to throw it away, or call for an interview, so getting to the point is important. Simple and straight to the point. Also a cover letter can be a nice thing to have with the resume.

That is a basic resume, it goes over my certifications and my work experience (which can be merged with volunteer experience if that list happens to be short). Hobbies can never hurt to include, as long as its sensible. If you enjoy going to the rifle range every weekend, that would be nice to include if you are applying to Blackwater, but probably not for a librarian position. The posted resume, is however, not a good look for a resume. It was copy pasted out of a word document for content, the spacing got a little messed up. When you decide to print it off, do not use regular printer paper, go and get some nicer paper. If you do not want to buy a whole package, you can go to a copy place, like Kinko's and they will have that available. One thing to make sure of is that you make everything correct. Everything has accurate spacing, spelling, and punctuation. If you cant get it right on paper, how could you possibly get the job done right?

Also, get an email, that you aren't embarrassed to give out. Get something with your name it it, like the email just posted, it will make you look that much more professional.

OK then, well then, I'm assuming that a resume and CV would be the same thing, so I'll use mine as a template and see if I can talk you through it:

[hr]

Resume

Name
Adress
Phone
Mobile
Email

Quite simple stuff there

Personal Statement

A Hard working, Conscientious individual who is able to work both in a team and leading one. Prepared to listen to others and ready to step up to any challenge.

Not sure how long your Personal statement needs to be, but don't make it drag on, ensure its to the point and backed up by the rest of the Resume, Perhaps dig out the old school reports and see what people have to say about you

Education

XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX School September 2007-Present

Subjects Taken:

English Literature
History
Law
Drama
General Studies

XXXXXXXXX September 2001-June 2007

GCSE’s Obtained 2007:

A English Literature
A English Language
AA Double Science
A Mathematics
B French
C History
C Design & Technology Resistant Materials

Other Qualifications 2007:

Double Distinction – CiDA Course
Junior Sports Leader Award level 1

GCSE’s Obtained 2006:

C Statistics

Essentially any form of formal qualification you have, generally you will have a certificate for it. If not then I suggest putting what you are currently studying and if you have anything a predicted grade

Work Experience & Volunteer Work

Obviously if you have nothing to put here at all then omit the title, but even a part time job you may have had can show that you are reliable.

Interests & Achievements

Here you show just how much of a well rounded character you are, any clubs, sports activities go here, and I would put any form of qualification you hold with them in here as well, for example my 5th Kyu in Karate would go here.

Skills
Here you show them what you've gained from all of the above areas, Talk about your skills, and show where you got them from.

[hr]

And at the end of the day, one thing about a resume-2 sides of A4 with ample spacing so it looks attractive and a border (always) is preferable to a 20 page resume with your life history crammed into it. The resume is a taster, you need to make sure you've got something to talk about if there's going to be an interview or something. Don't panic if you've not got enough, often it's better that way as you can actually fit it all in, whereas other people would have to cut bits out that they can't keep. I hope that helps somehow.

Yep. I'm from Québec (In Canada) so I'm French Canadian.

But still the basic the basic layout should help.

Once you've got your resume drafted feel free to post it up here, I'm sure we'll all be happy to look through it and proofread it for you and offer advice on it. Proofreading is vital though. Usually if the person reading it sees a mistake they chuck it.

I agree with Haddy, have 2 or 3 diffenret people proof read your resume.

Woundn't want you to appear illiterate in front of your potential employer.

I know it's not Boneguard's fault, but the irony in that makes me chuckle. :P
