Default Combat Robotics

So, in the real world, I've been busy. Not to say that you guys aren't, but I've been researching and choosing components for a combat robot.

Yesterday, I successfully tested the control scheme. The controller, receiver, and robot "brain" were all linked together.

We had a tense moment when we hooked the "brain" (A $500 blue brick that connects the batteries to the motors to the receiver) up to our battery and smoke went everywhere, the wires were hot, and one length just toasted itself. It smelled awful. We worried that we had a short.

Well, I floated the idea that maybe we had messed up the polarity, and a handy check from a voltmeter proved the unthinkable - our commercial battery was labeled incorrectly. "Never in a million years would I think to check that" said the wielder of the voltmeter.

After that, we "bound" the receiver to the controller, and plugged the receiver into the "brain", and things worked.

Note: What I call the "brain" is actually an electronic speed controller (ESC)

Next, we'll be wiring the ESC-receiver setup to the motors, which are mounted in test-chassis (A mockup to see if our controls will drive the robot design we have planned. It's good enough to drive around a parking lot or down hallways.)

The motors, by the way, are electric wheelchair motors. We have two, each powerful enough to push around a fat person. In a 120 lb robot, that means we can go faster than you can run.

After we get the wiring done, and it works, we'll be refining the channel mixing on the controller and begin "actually" building the robot. Y'know, the fun part. As opposed to the "deeply intellectually satisfying" part of figuring out how to control the damn thing.

Sweet progress.

as long as you dont build a $2,000.00 robot that swings a 2.00 hammer.

I wonder, is it illegal to put a gun on a civilian combat robot?

What are you doing this for? I program for a FIRST FRC Robotics team. It's great fun. I take it you have no autonomous period though?

Naw, that was back during my high-school days; I'm trying to get onto my university's solar-powered car team but I haven't heard much about it this year.
