I don't agree with his whole rant against microsoft being evil (Oh I know they are, but still seems a bit much.) But that lady... gah. 'You can't give YOUR free stuff to OUR kids! That's illegal!"

Microsoft is so evil they're one of the most charitable corporations on earth with Bill Gates personally spending billions of dollars to solving problems related with poverty and disease.

Mean while Steve Jobs still refuses to set up an Apples related Charity Group even after he's rolling in money.

This is why I can't take anti-Microsoft people seriously, they're often narrow minded zealots who display a flagrant refusal to look beyond their little world of programming and technological blah blah.

Well said Crazed!

I'm surprised that the teacher is that short-sighted though. Most people have at least heard of the open source movement. I think it's a sad day when every little thing that comes out of a child's mouth is automatically wrong compared to what the adult "knows". :
It's not like we're teaching our children at the same level of 20 years ago.

Slashdot recently reported on it, and the followup story.

I should probably also mention that Apple does a lot of educational discount stuff.

Sure, open source is pretty well known and accepted within the technical crowd, but plenty of teachers and other non computer types would assume that anything available for free is either junk or some kind of trap. I guess it's marginally better than clicking on any "free stuff" banner on the internets, but not much.

I like open source and linux, but as a practical matter, I use windows far more often. It's got the apps I need, and it's convenient.

Apple does no more educational discount than Microsoft does, really.

But the point stands that for the most part, there is no human reason for a school system to be using Windows. I can only think of one class that would require it to run AutoCAD. Otherwise, it should be Linux all the way- that way kids can learn REAL comptuer skills, not bullshit Microsoft Excel stuff that should be so obvious it isn't even funny (the bullshit not being at Excel, its a great program, but its self-explanitory. You don't need a class on it).

This reminds me of another story. Basically there was a computer club, that was writing a big old program as a group project. A teacher overheard them saying they were going to "Try some PHP", as in the scripting language PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. She assumed it had to be a terrible drug, like PCP, and had them arrested.

Meh, most people don't need to learn real computer skills. For the average office drone, learning to be good with MS Office is all they'll ever need. Now, if you want a future with computers, sure, you'll want a lot more. Still though, you will need to learn windows. Any major company is going to be predominately windows boxes...any linux is going to be on the server side of things.

... not in my company, *grumble grumble* ... dual boots with Linux defaults ...

The fact that these things aren't offered will inevitably hold back many people though.

Oh to see a computer nerd get angry. I love it, I can troll them too. :P Cept they're more likely to break things...like my computer. :P

To mention the parents being bad with compies though...my mom couldn't figure out why the speakers were buzzing but no music was coming out.

Turns out, she didn't press play. :P
