Hello.

I've decided to attempt to make a fullsize (or close of 1:1) replica of the Hammerburst Assault Rifle from Gears of War. Pics can be found on Google. My aim is to make it as lifelike as possible, whilst keeping the overall model cheap and reasonably easy to make. I've never made anything of any value (i.e., that took me more than a week to make) and I need help on the following topics:

1. What should I make it out of?
2. How should I make it? (step-by-step)?
3. How much would it cost based on the specs you give me?
4. How heavy will it be (based on specs)?
5. Will it be durable?

I'm not too worried about painting it, my Dad has an airbrush. My only concerns about it are the ones listed above and the need for the gun to have the following abilities:

1. I must be able to pull the trigger.
2. The ammunition cartridge must be removable and not prone to falling out of the gun.

Thank you for your help, and before you go, fetch me a tissue. I'm salivating over the release of Gears of War 2 in a mere twelve days. :P

Plasticard will do the tric, but it's really expensive. Actually, anything I can think of is very expensive. Cardboard is cheap, easy to mould etc. But it's cardboard...
Aluminium is VERY expensive, but durable, strong and not to hard to work with if you have a gasburner. It will make a heavy replica, though. last is carbon, but that's REALLY hard to get and REALLY REALLY expensive. Maybe styrofoam, but that's not very durable.
Basic fact is that there's no way you can combine the things you want. So I think if you want easy detail, your best bet is stryrofoam. Not to expensive. you can make it in two halves and put them together, with the trigger in between so you can move it. Same goes for the ammo cartridge, although I don't know how you can make it without falling out...

Magnetize the magazines and magazine well so they won't fall out.

You could start with a wood base to get the basic frame, then use plastic or something to cover and detail it.

I can think of a sixth question - why the hammerburst?!?! Almost any other gun in that game would be cooler to make :P

As viorlashasui said, I would probably go with wood, or at least a wood base. It's probably your cheapiest, easiest to get hold of material, it's durable, it's got weight to it but it's not too heavy, and it should be fairly easy to cut/shave/file/sand/work with in general.
As for the trigger... no idea, but I'm sure someone here will have a solution

Hmm... It has to be the Hammerburst? Because really, the Lancer would be a lot easier. It's actually been done before, although rather crappily, IMO.

If you're still dead-set on making a Hammerburst though... I can't really help you there. Sorry.

Wood base, of course. Get it from a lumberyard, not a craft shop, vastly cheaper.

A good carving knife, and off you go. You can use plasticard, epoxy, etc to add detail later.

I agree about using magnets to hold the magazine in place, also, they give a nice click when you pop it in.

I suggest raiding an inexpensive cap gun for the trigger assembly. Not only does this give you a proper trigger with a spring, it makes at least some noise when fired.

I'd think maybe.. finding a cheap toy gun for the handle and trigger details. Heck, even if you find a decent nerf gun, and base it on that, then it can actually fire something =) I'm thinking of making a boltgun or bolt pistol based on the nerf nstrike recon..

Anyways, maybe a model as a base, then work it up to using wood to get the shape of it, then plasticard for details. It'll be durable.. and have a good weight to it too.
