Default Airsoft

As many of you may know from recent conversations on chat, I've been really wanting to get into airsoft for the last few months. I've been a little nervous of asking my parents, but I was afraid of what they'd say and blah, blah, blah. Anyway, long story short, I'm not 100% sure but it looks like I will be buying my first Airsoft gun soon

Anyway, after some initial research & all that boring stuff, I've seen this G36 Electric Rifle, and this FAMAS Electric Rifle that look like the most promising guns for a beginner.

Let me emphasize something.
I have never gone airsofting before. I have never gotten any of this stuff before, I am completely, utterly, in every way, shape, and form new to this.

I just want to know if this is the right way to go, etc. Currently I'm leaning towards the G36, but I don't want to buy anything yet because I don't know if I'm making any mistakes, or if I need to do anything that I wouldn't know from just the average knowledge of airsoft. For instance, I have no idea what size ammo I need to get, as well as how much I should get to start me off or even to last me for a while.
Also, and most obviously, like to know which gun you think I should get. I'm open to suggestions - I definitely have enough money for pretty much anything, but I don't want to go shelling out on a $300 airsoft gun if it's my very first one? I'll let you guys be the judge of whether I should go for these Entry-Level guns to start, and, if so, if these are good ones that I've picked out and which one you would recommend more.

Thanks in advance for the help. Sorry if I left any important information out, as I said I have next to no knowledge of any of this, so any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Well, from personal experiance (I used to airsoft quite a bit), I have to urge you to get the FAMAS at all possible. In airsoft guns, only one thing matters: FPS (feet per second). I dont care how many rounds you can shoot in 5 seconds. It doesnt matter if I can see them coming and side-step em. Your G36, while cheaper, only has 200, while the FAMAS has almost 400. Thats a huge difference.

If the price is whats putting you towards the G36, it actually makes more sense to get the FAMAS. Many/most airsoft players have atleast spring guns with 350+ fps and up, many have electric, and a sizeable amount even have 500+ gas guns. If you get the G36, you will eventually upgrade. However, the FAMAS is pretty good, and should last you a while.

Nope, it isn't. As I mentioned earlier, I have an extremely flexible budget.

I'm talking to Toastmaster in chat and he's telling me to get a higher quality, better gun, even if it's my first. Good idea/bad idea?

1shot,

Like I told you in chat, don't get that G36. Like Mavfreak mentioned, its FPS is very low, and it's just not a very decent gun in general. That FAMAS on the other hand is quite a nice gun. I wasn't expecting nearly as much FPS from a $50 gun! The only problem I see with the FAMAS is that its magazine capacity is so low, which means you'll either spend a lot of money on extra magzines, or time on the Airsoft field reloading your single.

My mistake when it came to Airsoft was buying a cheap P90 for about $30. Its magazine capacity was nice, but its FPS was very low, and its shots were very random and would almost always blow away from your target in the slightest of winds. Definitely go for a high quality gun, even if it's expensive. You'll want to upgrade quite soon if you get a cheap gun, and that'll cost you even more.

Things you'll want to look for when shopping for a gun:
  • High FPS, preferably 330+. These guns will give you good accuracy and range, and wind won't be a problem.
  • Hi-Cap magazine, preferably 300+ rounds. If you're trigger happy you'll be out of ammo way too fast with any less.
  • Metal gear box. If your gun's got a metal gear box, it'll perform much better than a gun without.

Thanks for the comments.

This G36K seems to be better? A good deal, or no?

The G36K is the one I've been looking at. It looks like a great gun.

I'm getting the Classic Army G36C. Its perfect for my playing style and terrain, plus I think its a damn sexy gun.

However its probably a bit out of your budget range...

For my first gun, yeah, I think so. $90 seems like a reasonable price to pay - plus, I doubt my parents will be enthused if I tell them "Hey, I wanna start this new hobby of shooting stuff, and, not only that, but it'll cost about $350 to start..."

Sorry to double post, but...

This gun seems a lot better for just $10 more...

http://www.airsplat.com/Items/ERM-JG-G36C-638.htm
Thoughts? It has 20 more FPS as well as 100 more rounds capacity and looks A LOT cooler, in my opinion. However, it doesn't come with goggles, so I'd have to buy those separately (unless I can use ski goggles?)
Overall, I think that's worth $10 more, but I don't know much so I'll leave it up to you. I don't know if the manufacturer is reliable, if there is something important missing that the other one has, etc., so I'm just putting it out there.

I thinks it's best if you buy dedicated Airsoft goggles/Mask (you only get two eyes and for the mask:so many teeth)

Forgive me for asking if you've already mentioned, but what terrain or type of site is within your area or do you think you want to play in? CQB (Close Quarters Battles) or woodland?

Personally, from airsplat, I purchased a WELL MP7 for use in a CQB field. Despite it's lower FPS (which in CQB fields must be below 300 anyway) no one has managed to actually sidestep my shots, even at range. It's extremely compact and lightweight make it perfect for that setting. It's cheap, and effective and looks awesome.

In larger areas you'll want higher FPS and a longer barrel/larger battery and suchforth.

From what I hear JG seems to be a good meshing of price and quality, but I would stick to your suggested price of 90$ for starters. The JG AK47 Beta is 99.99 on Airsoftgi.com and is very well reviewed. Search for Airsoft Reports channel on youtube and look for their videos concerning the WELL R4 and AK47 Beta as well as the other guns. Also search for FlankerTanker and FoxtrotTango1, all channels. Those guys gave me lots of insight.

Oh, and unless already stated, 6MM .2s are standard.

Me and Vash113 use this mask:

masks make looking through your sights difficult, but I prefer the extra insurance in a CQB environment, especially since the pointability of my MP7.
