Default Northern Lights / Golden Compass

Why on earth did they feel it necessary to change the name of the book?

I prefer the name Northern Lights myself. I find it irritating when book names get changed, except with the possibility of bladerunner.

Anyway, what do you think? Prefer the Golden Compass?

The book "The Golden Compass" has had that name since before 1997. That's when I first read it. ;D

In that case, so is sex. Therefore, pornstars and prostitutes are professional athletes.

Same. Well, I read it in 2001. I didn't even know there was another name for it.

Awesome books though.

Same, I read it maybe 5 years ago and it was The Golden Compass, re-read it 2 years ago (forgot how damn good those books were, though through and towards the end of the third I thought it started losing it's touch)

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the series is called The Northern Lights, it's just the first book that's called The Golden Compass. Was the first book called The Northern Lights previously?

It was my impression that the first book was "The Golden Compass" and the series was The Northern Lights... and since the movie is based just on the first book, it works.

No, the series is "His Dark Materials". "The Golden Compass" has been around as a name almost as long as "Northern Lights".

Well at launch that movie was a failure anyway. For all we care they could have named it the original title (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) and marketed as a comedy along the lines of Star Wars Holiday Special and it would still have fared as well until the Director's Cut came along.

Anyone notice how the name changes are invariably American? I still love the Harry Potter one...

Arg, that irritated me no end... my aunt in England mailed me the first book (with the real title) before the anyone else on this continent even knew who Harry was.
