Default "300" (in 40k terms)

(since this is sort of offt-topic, I'll stick it in here)
I'll just skip the post in all-caps about just how awesome this movie is ;D and go straight to the point.

When I saw it yesterday together with a friend, we both being 40k fans, we just couldn't resist the urge to shout "FOR THE SLAUGHTER!!" instead of whatever Leonidas was saying ;D Well, actually, we thought those spartans looked exactly like space marines defending some planet. And of course this particular Chaos army was led by none other than a Slaaneshi DP - Xerxes is a model one! ;D
We even thought that the 300 merit their own chapter...

Did anyone have similar thoughts while watching it?

Oh and, just for fun's sake:

Nah, I would definitely have the 300's side outnumbered by the invading side.

"1000 star systems, of the gods of Chaos descend upo....oh wait...shit...we don't have that many....um...okay"

But instead, imagine 300 Eldar Exarch defending against the imperium?

"1000 systems of the Imperium of Man descends upon you! Our fleets, will blot out the stars!!"

Sounds so much more badass.

Also Eldar culture is a lot based on Greek culture, whilst the Imperium is similar to Persia in structure. (many diverse legions from many planets under one gigantic bureacratic rule of a man who is worshipped as a god)

Actually, I'd think the Space Marines would fit the Spartan role.

I mean, come on, specifically bred for battle? Superhuman? Ridiculous fighting skills? Never turn back, never surrender, etc? Definately sounds like Space Marine doctrines to me. As for the overwhelming enemy horde... Tyranid, for sure. Lambs to the slaughter, heh.

I would take Khorne Berzerkers against the Imperium or a Slaanesh cult army. The Eldar are way too effeminate to be proper Spartans.

nothing like shouting "THIS IS SPARTA!" just before annihilating your opponent's units, eh?

Space Marines, yes very easy to see them taking the role of Sparta. Eldar, bit of a stretch, they don't strike me as the hold the line type. Would have been more hit and fade attacks trying to thin the 'persians' numbers as much as possible. Beserkers wouldn't fit, they wouldn't ahve drawn a line in the sand and trie dto hold it. The persians would ahve shown up and the beserkers just gone straight in. "The thous-*Sound of chainaxe impacting body*"

Another group I could see in the Sparta role would be certain Imperial Guard forces. I small force of Iron Guard for example would take the hold the line, no retreat mentality.

I might point out gay does not right away mean effeminate.

There was a long history of homosexuality in the various Greek and Roman cultures. But it was not, on the whole, connected to effeminacy. On the contrary, it was related far more closely to the idea of masculinity than it is today. The same is also true for periods of Japan's history.
