Default Reader-Guided Story (Chapter 2 is now out!)

We called them The Horde...

Where they came from we don't know, but their goal was simple; the absolute destruction of the Imperium. Not the first to want that, I'll admit, but they were strong and they were serious.

Imperial Guard regiments were raised from all locations, but the numbers were not enough. In desperation, a call was sent to the Guard Commanders of the T'au O'nline Sept, a collection of various races united under a common cause. Though the Aun'O of the Sept could not commit all his Cadres, for fear of inviting strikes from the Horde on Tau space, he allowed the Guard elements to mobilise.

Three months of bloody war followed, and it was not without loss...

In the darkness, three armoured soldiers advanced, weapons raised. Their target stood ahead of them, calm and composed, resting his hands on the barrel of his sniper rifle as if it were a walking stick. The man glanced nonchelantly at the trio, raising a quizzical eyebrow.
"You seem lost, can I be of assistance?"
The leader of the squad took two steps forward.
"Drop the gun!"
The figure glanced at the rifle. "I'm not exactly holding it..."
"I said drop it!"
He sighed. "Gentlemen, allow me to brief you on the situation. You are about to die. The reason you are about to die is you are stood there, pointing your guns at me, caught in the fantasy that I truly am stupid enough to leave myself totally open to attack..."
The leader smiled, though his helmet hid the expression. "We aren't stupid. We have men watching the flanks, and any attempt-"
A body flew into view, hurled from inside one of the store houses. The head was missing. The trio raised their weapons towards the doorway, and died as Wargamer leapt from behind, dropping into the alley sword-first. It all happened quickly. Legio Mortis emerged, looking at the scene. He glanced at the sniper, and grinned.
"Bloody mad plan, Mkoll."
Mkoll shrugged, "it worked, didn't it?"
Wargamer nodded, "but will it work the next time?"
"Only one way to find out," Mkoll answered.

* * *

Aftercrescent read the reports again, and felt a little more depressed. The war for Cerina Tertius was going badly. The armies of the Horde were strong, and the Imperial Guard were stretched thin. Most of the fighting in the capital had become little more than skirmishes, desperate battles as the Horde tried to secure the city. If it weren't for the timely arrival of the Tau Online divisions, the planet would have fallen by now.
"Sir!"
Aftercrescent looked up at the freshly-scrubbed orderly stood in the doorway. "Yes? What is it?"
The Orderly handed over a data-slate, "reports that Wargamer's detachment is still active. Enemy vox-traffic confirms he has been sighted running ambushes in the Munitorum."
Aftercrescent smiled, "I knew the reports of his death were false. The Horde have been chasing ghosts for days..."
"Do you think Mkoll is still alive too?"
Aftercrescent nodded, "oh yes... Orderly, I need you to do something for me..."

I'm confused... the poll tells us not to vote, and yet the post says we should...

I think the intent was to have people read it before voting.

I'm interested to see what other guard players will appear.

Dra'Tuisch, Tom Norman with a lot of tanks, King Winter, acadiabulldog, and dare I say All-Father? We haven't seen much of Ellesar to date, but you can't forget him!

...I'll be adding this to my "watch" list.

Bah. With Wargamer here and at least three mages, we should be able to make a dent in the Horde before we all die.

The warning is simply there to remind people not to vote until they have read the story. I'll clarify that.

If Novae's a Guard player, then there's no way I'm not... :

Anyhow: Voted option 2
