Default The Importance of Blood

Hi everybody!
I just signed up as a blood donor. I am also considering to sign up for donating bone marrow, and my organs if I were to die/become a vegetable.

Why have I done this?
Well, as I was reading a paper I came over an article. A man with cancer was thanking the people who had provided him with the supplies of blood which saved his life. The article further gave information and facts on the importance of blood donation. I found some webpages and pamphlets and read deeper into the topic.
A note of importance I will share with you:

-"There is no replacement of blood. Blood is a living material, and even with modern and advanced technology, it cannot be artificially produced. It has to be donated."

The requisitions to become a donor varies from country to country, but a simple google search will give you webpages that provides every info you'll need.

Another thing about becoming a donor, is that they'll give you a decent check on your health. A thorough analysis of your bloodsamples can decide if you are prone to illnesses or have something you were not aware of. They also check if your blood-pressure is good.

Also, you can sign a document which allows your samples to be used in research to cure illnesses/diseases. Especially cancer like leukemia, as our good and dear friend Freddie Hope passed away from, not too long ago.

Sure, the thought of needles might be demoralizing but I, myself had almost a phobia of needles. That I have overcome through this.

I'd recommend anyone to sign up as a donor. Every drop counts! Every contribution helps to save lives.

Cheers

I'm not a fan of needles, but I'll probably have one of my humanitarian days at some point.

As Bart Simpson said: "I can bleed"

I've did it a couple of months ago and I'm probably doing it again tomorrow.

It feels good (afterwards), and there's even free coffee at the donation clinic. ...err, besides from the easy karma boost.

Actually, I`m both a blood donor and bone marrow donor (well, at least I`ve got an entry in their databank; I haven`t donated any yet...).

In Austria, as a young, healthy male, you have little chances NOT to a least donate once in your life blood - namely during military service (and you get half a day off, too!).

I still try to donate at least twice per year.

PS: Needles don`t really scare me anymore - I was donating Blood Plasma for about one year... Trust me, as soon as you have done this a couple of times, needles hold no more teror...

I'm A- and have been giving blood for 2 years now at least (you have to be at least 16 I think, so I only started when I was 16), had a lot of family members (uncles, aunts etc) who could have used it, so it gives me reason to keep donating, i've also enslaved most of my friends and family to do the same.

It's really the right thing to do, it's most annoying when you get people saying 'why bother...' they won't be saying it when they need it or there isn't enough for them. Sounds harsh but it really makes you sick to think that when you give blood it's going to someone who wouldn't make the same sacrifice if they had the chance.

We've all gotta stick together ya? ;D

I'm not being a donor of anything. Not because I'm a jerk, but for two reasons. 1) I HATE needles. 2) I'm doing my part to stop overpopulation. Although when I say it people usually think I'm an @$$. :P

In that case, so is sex. Therefore, pornstars and prostitutes are professional athletes.

I'm planning to donate all three when I'm old enough. (Even organs! You don't actually need both of your kidneys..........Do you?)

Meh, you need one or to or somethin like that because it cleans out your blood system.

People usually lose their lives from overdrinking alcohol.

I'm never gonna drink :funny:

I'll proabably donate blood, my grandma would have liked me to help people in some way.
