Default Holy awesome!

Well, thank my insomnia, I was browsing through Fark.com and found this really cool series of pictures. A group of workers pulling a WW2 Era German tank out of a river bed.

Pulling out the tank.

Just thought it was pretty cool...

Wish I could sleep. :-\

EDIT: Actually I think its a lake bed.

Ohhh... cool. I wonder if they knew it was a tank at first or if they had a "hey, that's not a car!" moment.

That's not a Sherman........you can see the iron cross on the side for one thing and the turret is wrong for another. I have to look it up but I'm sure that's a panzer.

Still, that thing is in pretty good shape for being under water. I'm not sure about the insides but that thing looks like it rolled of the museum floor.

Yeah I noted that too. It is in incredible exterior condition. I was shocked to see it like that because you think the mud and water would rust it more. The interior must be shot to hell but it looks great.

The mud and crap probably preserved it. That happens sometimes.

Run everybody! They saved Hitler's brain! And now thy're dredging up the old tanks!

More info on it....

Its actually a Soviet T-34/76A that was captured by the Germans and, apparently, purposely driven into the lake to prevent it from being used on them after they left. The mud preserved it (obviously) very well.

Quote:
From February to September 1944, heavy battles were fought in the narrow, 50 km-wide, Narva front in the northeastern part of Estonia. Over 100,000 men were killed and 300,000 men were wounded there. During battles in the summer of 1944, the tank was captured from the Soviet army and used by the German army. (This is the reason that there are German markings painted on the tank’s exterior.) On 19 September 1944, German troops began an organised retreat along the Narva front. It is suspected that the tank was then purposefully driven into the lake, abandoning it when its captors left the area.
Quote:
Altogether, 116 shells were found on board. Remarkably, the tank was in good condition, with no rust, and all systems (except the engine) in working condition.
The tank was actually found in September of 2000.
