Default Gauss Rifle Experiment

For school, I have to do a Science Fair Project. I was thinking of making a Gauss Rifle, which is for those who don't know a less powerful railgun that uses a different method of magnetic propulsion. Does anyone have an idea on what kind of experiment I can do with a Gauss Rifle?

Not sure what you're asking...

Do you mean getting the Rifle to work?
See how much power it takes to fire the projectile a certain distance?

I have a friend that made one for his Senior Project a few years ago... It was basically a glass tube surround by copper(i think) wire. He never finished it so I don't know the rest of the specs. Though, now I think about it... that's not what the gauss rifle you want is, is it? I'd do some google-ing.

No. I found an article on the web that showed how to cheaply make a working Gauss Rifle. I'm just wondering what I can do with it. I want to experiment something revolved around using the Gauss Rifle.

Yes, an explosion of oozing blood, guts, and fluids.

But seriously, does anyone have an idea on what I can do for an experiment involving a Gauss Rifle?

Do a momentum experiement. Compare the effects of kinetic force on an object when it by projectiles of different sizes and speeds. Start with a ping-pong ball, then a tennis ball... use the Gauss Rifle as a grand finale.

Hmm. That sounds interesting. I'll consider that. But does anyone know how to make a cheap homemade railgun? I could compare the speeds of a steel ball shot through a Railgun and a Gauss Rifle.

Here's a site for building a Micro-Railgun. 3 inches long! Uses a very small piece of aluminum foil as ammunition. The only problem I can foresee is wiring and circuitry, unless you know about that kind of thing. I know I don't.

And for a Cheap Gauss "Rifle" http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scito...ets/gauss.html

Its not *really* a "Rifle" per say. But it is a linear accelerator. Looks like pretty much the easiest thing to build. Just need to find some strong magnets.

If you wanted a Railgun that shoots steel ball-bearings... I think you'd have a problem. Besides the fact that even the micro is somewhat dangerous, something shooting a ball bearing really fast is asking for trouble.

You should post pics when you get something together!

Momentum Comparison, Projectile Motion, Muzzle Velocity..

Railguns are simple in construction and firing. Gauss Guns on the other hand are pretty complex, as you need a switching circuit etc that is timed perfectly..

Railguns - basically two rails which make use of Lorentz Force to push a conductive projectile between the rails out at high speed. I think you need something to push it out initially though, otherwise it's just another conductor in the circuit.
Gauss Guns - basically a series of solenoids, which activate one after another to push/pull a metal object through them. The complexity comes in getting the solenoids to activate one after another at precise moments so that the projectile will actually accelerate rather then just roll down the tube..

For building either, Wikipedia is fairly helpful in giving you a general idea:
Railguns: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun
+ Schematic diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Railgun-1.png
Coilguns: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss_gun

Be sure to look at the list of external links too :P

p.s. If I get bored later on these school holidays, I'll see if I can build a small 9V railgun :P

at school they keep telling me america is dangerous because theres to many weapons. heck i think a rialgun is alot more deadly than a 9mm. granted most people who use pistols are either drunk or in the mafia, and neither of these can make a railgun. well maybe the mob could. hey thats an experiment you can do: "Do crime rates increase if you provide the local mafia with guass rifles?"
