Default On Damaged Currency

Ahoy all.

I have just accidently ripped a ten pound note in half whilst casually handling it. It just fell apart in my hands. It must have been folded too often.

Anyway.

I was wondering- should I mourn for the loss of a well-earned 10? Or shall I whip out the sellotape and stick it back together?

Does anyone know the law regarding damaged notes in England?

Id tape it back together and use it when I'm buying something with alot of bills so its in the middle of a wad and people don't notice. Not sure what the law is about it though.

Tape it back together, take it to a bank, and ask for a new one. Providing you have the complete Queen's Face, and the value of the note (I'm not sure if this means the hologram, or the number in the corner), then they should change it. If you've got both halfs, they definately will.

The rip is through the edge of the hologram.

But yeah, I will take it to a bank.
Cheers.

Yeah, but I don't spend money on expensive stuff that often, and when I do, I use my card.

there is an international law for currency exchange conditions:

in a nutshell any special hologram or indetifying feature must be intact,
but i supose the bank might give you a new as a gesture of good faith

Dunno what the laws are in England, but in Canada if you take a damaged note to the Bank of Canada they will pay you for it based on the amount of the bill remaining. For example, only have half a $5 bill they will give you $2.50 for it.

In the states, as long as you have more than half the bill left, and the denomination is still intact, it's ok to use. Most stores won't accept it, but banks sure will.

In Switzerland (the country of banking) as long as the printing tag number is intact, you'll get it back... EVEN if the only piece you have is a small piece with the printing tag number on it...

(printing tag number - every note has a personal number which states when it was printed, which print it was (ie: 1029th note to be printed will have that number on it) and which centre printed it (usually includes a few letres)

Same as in England, if you have the serial number, denomination, and IIRC the face then its still legal tender. Best to just take it to a bank though as they will know its OK but Joe Bloggs shopkeeper probably won't.
