I was playing vs. a dark eldar opponent who told me that agonisers roll to hit, and any to hit roll of 4+ wounds (with no roll to wound). I always played them as hitting normally, but then needing a to wound roll of 4+ to wound.

We looked in the codex, where it says something along the lines of: you roll to hit as normal, but you do not roll to wound, instead, any roll of 4+ wounds. (that is not a quote, it is from memory. Please look up the rule for yourself.)

Does this mean:

1) he is correct, there is no to wound roll.

2) I am correct, the wound roll is 4+.

3) You roll to hit, on 4+ on the to hit roll you cause wounds, then if you only need a 3+ to hit and you roll 3's then you have to roll to wound normally using your strength. (and what do you do if you need 5's to hit?)

or

4) something else entirely

Read it as "Always wounds on 4+, regardless of target's Toughness". That is how it is supposed to be used.

In other words, you are correct.

I agree with Wargamer. I've always played it that you automatically wound on a 4+.

At my store we roll to hit, then with the attacks that hit you roll again and on a 4+ we automatically wound regardless of toughness.

I think that your #2 is correct.
